Fatal Traffic Accident Claims 2 Lives

There was a double fatality this evening at around five-thirty p.m. near miles seven and a half on the Phillip Goldson Highway. A total of five persons were injured in the collision; two perished on the scene and the others have been rushed to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital. News Five spoke with Rural Regional Commander, Senior Superintendent Edward Broaster, a few minutes ago.

Sr. Supt. Edward Broaster, Rural Regional Commander, Eastern Division

“Preliminary investigation thus far has revealed that we had two vehicles overtaking the line of traffic. One managed to squeeze into the lane; the white Mercedes failed to get into the lane and collided into the white pickup truck. As a result of that, we had two fatalities from the pickup truck. The driver has been escorted to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital along with four others from out of the white Mercedes.”

“Could you confirm for us the white pickup truck was heading down to Belize City.”

“The white pickup was heading down to Belize City and the Mercedes was heading towards Ladyville.”

Mike Rudon

“Could you say how many persons were in the white car?”

Sr. Supt. Edward Broaster

“Like I said, preliminary investigation reveal that four people were in the white car while three was in the pickup; the two fatalities that we have were from the pickup truck.”

Mike Rudon

“Basically would you say that speeding is a problem in this area between Haulover and Ladyville?”

Sr. Supt. Edward Broaster

“Well for a time now, yes speeding has been a big problem between Belize City and Ladyville hence the reason that we are looking forward to putting a dedicated highway patrol from Haulover Bridge to Burrell Boom Junction to deal with speeding and reckless driving in this area.”

  1. Driver on PG Highway says:

Driver of white car was speeding all along. He drove pass us and a few other cars in the opposite lane less than 10 minutes before we arrived at the accident scene. We see many wreckless drivers on the PG highway on a daily basis and pray everyday to arrive at our destinations safely.

  2. Jason says:

THis area is now residential-please place some speed bumps every 2-3 miles to stop these races between trucks busses and other morons overtaking the line of traffic everyday-it was bound to happen-do your job GOB

  3. Ladyville Resident says:

As a driver who travels that stretch of highway up to 4 times in a day I have to always be on the alert, always on the lookout for reckless drivers overtaking like idiots in a hurry to meet their maker. We seem to have too many of them in driving in Belize and something really needs to be done about them. They are putting our lives at risk. It would also help if our government would make more of an effort to make our roads safer.
