Senator Lisa Shoman Joins the BTV in Sarstoon Island Trek…

Lisa Shoman

On Wednesday morning, the Belize Territorial Volunteers, on a scouting mission in the vicinity of Sarstoon Island, had a near brush with Guatemalan military personnel upon returning from the remote location.  That incident, along with recent comments made by the Minister of National Security on a pending expedition to the secluded area, has motivated Senator Lisa Shoman to accompany the team in an official capacity.  The former Foreign Affairs Minister is joining the group as a parliamentarian representing the People’s United Party.  Notwithstanding her position as a member of the National Assembly, Shoman is advocating that government provides the necessary protection for those who will be participating in the trek on Sunday.  That intent has formally been communicated to the necessary agencies.

Lisa Shoman, P.U.P. Senator

“I decided to accompany the BTV and also others who were going along with them, I believe the media is going and a few other supporters, and the reason that I did so was because I became very concerned yesterday after listening to the declarations that were being made by the Minister of National Security.  It is clear to me that Sarstoon Island is a part of Belize and even if it is an area that Guatemala is claiming, the point could also be made that Guatemala is claiming half of Belize and all of the cayes.  That is absolutely no reason for people not to go to Sarstoon Island and I became very concerned that enough care and attention was not being taken and I decided that it was my responsibility since I have been a part of this process to take seriously the concerns that the BTV and others have, particularly after the incident of yesterday.  And after some reflection, consultation with the Leader of the Opposition, who I represent, I decided that I would accompany BTV, reached out to Mr. Wil Maheia and let him know that I was interested and received his kind invitation to accompany them.”

“So talk to us about those letters that you wrote to government officials.”

Lisa Shoman

“I think it is important to formally notify the Government of Belize of what it is I am intending to do.  I am a member of the National Assembly, among other things, and I think that it has to be taken very seriously when any member of the National Assembly is deciding to do something like this because I am well aware that the government is of the opinion that this is some kind of a dangerous move or an unwise move.  So I am letting them know formally that I will be accompanying the BTV.”

this will not make Ali, Sedi or Hulse happy.

rethink your position and they will let you join UDP as a PUP senator with fig leaf portfolio.

This is a righteous effort, united we stand, divided we fall. Maybe the whole legislative body should accompany them, with more boats, instead of appeasing the Guatemalans. This should be escalated for world consumption by notifying the NY Times and or the Washington Post. Everyone should have their cameras ready. This ultimately will help our effort at the ICJ, by shining a spotlight on the situation, should we choose to attend. Make sure to wear your life jackets.

Our military has been neglected way too long, by both administrations, just imagine our first military helicopter came courtesy of nefarious activity. No serious military patrol craft, ATVs, please give me a break. Britain just recently was getting rid of older surplus military gear and politicians please remember to sign up more Guatemalans to vote in the next general elections.

Blessing to all those going in this trip to the Sarstoon island on Sunday. If this island is for us, then we should not be questioning any one. The present government has long ago ignored his duties of protecting Belize and its people. By advising Belizeans not to visit what is rightfully ours is like being on Guatemala’s side. Today they prevent use from visiting this island , tomorrow it might be Baranco or other part of Toledo.
