….Is She Going in an Official Capacity?

According to Shoman, the idea that local military presence in the area, while accompanying the volunteer expedition, can inflame an already hostile situation with Guatemalan armed forces is total nonsense.  She maintains that military personnel from both countries have routinely conducted joint operations in that corner.  Furthermore, Shoman says that her capacity as a senator does not undermine the need for others on the trip to be protected since they are all Belizeans.

Lisa Shoman, P.U.P. Senator

“It’s not a matter that my office is any special office to need more protection than anyone else.  But it is certainly my intention to highlight that Belizeans deserve the care and concern of their government on any part of their country from internal or external threat.  It isn’t that I am saying there is an external threat, I am saying if you are so concerned that the BTV and others accompanying the trip will be safe then the smartest thing to do is to send the coast guard and or the B.D.F. along to ensure that we remain in Belizean waters and that no harm comes to anyone.”

“If I understand the concern of the persons who’ve spoken on this matter is that with military presence along with BTV, if there is any sort of confrontation the fact that military personnel are there, there could be the escalation…”

Lisa Shoman

“That is utter rubbish.  For years there have been link ups along the Adjacency Zone and those are always notified prior.  This is not the Adjacency Zone and there is absolutely no reason why the Ministry of National Security cannot inform their counterparts in Guatemala and even offer to the kind of link up that they do along the Adjacency Zone. I have already sent along to the OAS and they have acknowledged receipt.  In fact, I understand that there may very well be observers from the OAS present which would be a good thing. I am sure that the Guatemalan military can understand just as well as ours does what it is that Belizean civilians are going to do.  I sympathize with the position taken by Brigadier General Jones but I have also notified him that I am going and why and I think it is his responsibility as it is any military official to ensure that Belizean civilians are safe.”

As we’ve reported, despite their recent encounter the Belize Territorial Volunteers are departing for Sarstoon Island on Sunday morning.  The northern subgroup leaves Orange Walk Town shortly after midnight and will join their counterparts in Punta Gorda Town before continue the trek to the isolated landmass.

Late this evening, government issued a release stating that Senator Shoman’s addition to the upcoming excursion is merely a political ploy.  The announcement goes on to say that government, “expresses great consternation that Senator Shoman would join the excursion considering she has a particular role as the opposition’s representative on the bipartisan committee dealing with the Guatemalan territorial claim.  The government advises the public that while Shoman is a senator she is not going on this visit to the Sarstoon in her capacity as a senator but, instead as a private citizen.  While she is trying to convey that she is going officially, Shoman has no authorization from the Senate.  Similarly, she is not visiting the Sarstoon Island as a representative of the bipartisan committee.”

    Must be an exciting hike!!

My view is also that we should have no problem if the government advises Belizeans not to go. in fact, i would not be surprised if inside, the PM cheers these people on. We all have our role to play, including some of us acting as if we are against it.
