International Youth Day Celebrated in Belize

Shawn Saldano

On Wednesday, August twelfth, the world observed International Youth Day under the theme “Youth Civic Engagement”.  While opportunities for youth to engage at political, economic and social levels are low or non-existent, this day is set aside to raise awareness of the importance of youth and to encourage their participation as a key element for the achievement of sustainable human development. Locally, the Department of Youth Services will be celebrating the youth with an all day expo of young entrepreneurs at the ITVET in Belize City on Friday. We spoke with the PR rep of the DYS today and he told us why you should go out and support.

Shawn Saldano, Deputy PR, DYS

“It will be young entrepreneurs who will have their own booths out there and they will be able to display what their creative and innovative minds have done. And to even add, we have looked at ensuring that there are barbers, young barbers, who will be able to give some free back to school trimming tomorrow. So, it is an exciting and refreshing showcasing. From nine a.m to three pm it will be mostly information and socialization amongst our young people there. We have various invited guests and we are inviting all stakeholders to be a part of it because adequately it is all our responsibility to ensure that our children and young people are groomed. Then from three to six we are going to end with a grand concert. We are going to have Ernestine Carballo, Sharon Martinez, Nello Player and we are going to end of with Supa G who will be entertaining our young people. But not only will they be on the stage but we have been running our DJ camp here and so the end product from that camp will be on stage. We will be having our young male and female deejays; they will be entertaining the stage and there will be lots of giveaways It will be a fun and youth friendly environment.”

“The entrance is free?”

Shawn Saldano

“It is free and we will have food on sale. I want to emphasize for everybody to please come out. It will be very friendly and not anything sophisticated. It is really a celebration, celebrating with young people and theme for this year’s international youth day is “Youth Civic Engagement.”

Andrea Polanco

“Do you have an estimate of how many entrepreneurs will participate tomorrow?”

Shawn Saldano

“We are catering for about twenty to thirty and we are still in the process of finalizing our exact booths but we still have young people who are contacting us hand over fist wanting to be a part; because we are accommodating free of cost and they have to pay nothing to us and so all the profits if they are selling anything goes back to them and it is a booster for them. So, that is what we really have to emphasize that it is the young people time to showcase their talents and skills.”

Andrea Polanco

“From across the country?”

Shawn Saldano

“From across the country of Belize.”

The event will be from nine a.m. to six p.m.
