King Will Assume Control of Contested Property

On April twentieth, P.U.P. Lake-I standard bearer Cordel Hyde, at the eleventh hour, prevented the demolition of a derelict bungalow situated in what is described as community space.  The abandoned structure, according to Hyde, is the property of the Lake Independence Action Committee, a defunct entity which presumably operated during his tenure as area representative.  The parcel in question is now being processed through the Lands Department for reassignment to the residents of Lake-I.

Mark King, Lake-I Area Representative

“We are bound to put a community center in this area.  It is only rightful that this is the largest community in Belize and has no community center, no park, no nothing.  So we’re starting on that plan.  In regards to the building that they fought us for the last time, we continue to say that it was wrongful that they took that building and privatized it within the community space.  This is community space.  That is lot number 1661.  We have done two things, we have applied to the pertinent authorities to break down that building as a nuisance in this community and we will not pay Cordel Hyde for it.  And two, we have applied for title in the community’s name for lot number 1662 which is where we broke ground just now, right next to it.  So now we have the title and we are going to proceed within the next week or so start the building of the community center.”

“Okay, we know that there are community buildings in this, where the police station is years ago, that used to be called a community center.  We have the Samuel Haynes Center for Excellence, so what will make this one be, as you said it, your words, the first community center?”

Mark King

“It is the first community center which will carry out community activities for the simple fact that those areas, those centers weren’t community centers, one; and two, there not in Lake-I at present.  They’re in the constituency of Pickstock.  If you notice also, Lake-I is expanding.  Lake-I is huge and people are coming to the politician’s office for certain assistance that can be done within the space of a community center.  So you can separate politics from what people really need in their community.  So that is the objective here.”
