UNICOMER Hands Out Nine Scholarships

Nine students were awarded with scholarships today by UNICOMER Belize. For the past several years, we’ve covered the annual award and this year, UNICOMER says that they have increased the number of scholarships at all levels. News Five attended today’s ceremony at the Radisson Hotel and spoke with UNICOMER and a recipient of the award.

Kovenka James, Senior Marketing Officer, UNICOMER

“This is an initiative that we have done for the past twenty years. We have developed it- we started with one and have increased it as the years go by. Currently, we have nine presently on the scholarship. We have increased it to five high schools now, two junior colleges and three universities.”

Isani Cayetano

“Can you talk to us about the scope of these scholarships? Are these full term scholarships or are they annual scholarships based on performance?”

“It’s definitely based on performance. We have committed to four years for high school once you do good and same for junior colleges and university. Once you do good and continue your three point five average, you will definitely continue to the next level.”

“Talk to us about the eligibility for a student to actually become a scholarship recipient under this scholarship system?”

Kovenka James

“It was based on your economic standard and academic achievement. Those were the two qualifications, more economic because people need scholarships out there and they need to push to get further, they need the finance to get further and we saw the need. We saw the need to expand it more to get to the next level, like junior college and university, because some people can afford high school but when they get to the junior college level and the university level that is where they fall short. So, definitely, this is something that we want to continue.”

“The scholarship is an eighty percent scholarship where they will pay books and tuition. I will be majoring accounting, a Bachelor’s Degree at the University of Belize. I am really grateful to be given this opportunity. It is really helpful to me and my mother. I live with my mother only, so on her own I know she wouldn’t have been able to send me to university of Belize and I have been looking around for an opportunity like this for quite a while. Now that I have been given the opportunity, I know that I will not put it to waste. I will make my best effort to do as excellent as I can.”
