B.T.B. Confirms Carnival Cancellations

The Belize Tourism Board confirmed at noon today that indeed a total of fourteen calls have been canceled from this destination for the 2016 season when Carnival Cruise Lines plans to divert a pair of vessels elsewhere within the region, but says the financial effects are not substantive.  On Monday, Citizens Organized for Liberty through Action, COLA, broke the news in a release issued following an interview with Prime Minister Barrow upon his return to Belize after “private meetings” in Miami, Florida.  During that question and answer session, the P.M. was asked if he was aware of the cancellations, as well as the potential impact on the tourism industry.  While he said he did not know of the cancellations, P.M. Barrow responded that it was not on the basis of a need for a cruise port to be built in Belize City. But there is also the claim that the cruise line has been unhappy and dissatisfied with their experience in Belize.  At a press briefing today, Director of Destination Planning and Cruise at B.T.B., Valdemar Andrade, downplayed the issue of the cancellations saying that the shift in schedule is a routine part of the planning process.

“Carnival did redeploy two ships which affected our call schedule by fourteen calls for 2016, but this is a normal part of our scheduling process.  Every year we have a process where we go through where they book calls so they hold certain call positions to ensure that their ships can call on Belize, where we receive anywhere between three hundred to three hundred and fifty calls in Belize per annum.  So people vie for those positions.  Remember we have a four ship schedule policy so we can only schedule four ships a day so people try to hold their positions for those days, especially in high season, so it’s a management issue.  As cruise lines go cleaning up their call schedule, as they come to the end of the year they then want to secure and be sure of which days they have to call whichever destination.  And so as they clean that up they send us which ships they want to remove, which ships they are redeploying, which ships they are deploying to Belize because they might be moving ships from other destinations to here which happens very as well because every year this happens.  So our call schedule is never one hundred percent complete at this point in time.  Closer to December we would have a more definite schedule but throughout the year there are changes depending on what is happening in either destinations or with weather.  There are many reasons why people would redeploy and move ships around.”

Ok let’s give the devil his due! The crime rate in Belize did not just spike over the last 6 years. It has been bad and is getting worse for the last 20 years.

Poor leadership from both Parties is to be blamed.

  7. CEO says:

Tourist industry does not help the country much anyway, so them not coming back is not such a bad thing.

When you place a value on all the pollution and traffic on our delicate ecosystems and our utilities and factor in that all the ships and airplanes that get the people there and the fact that the major hotels are all owned and operated by foreign companies: their profits leave the country. The local people just get to sell trinkets and braid hair…One cannot help but wonder if it is really worth it.

Belize is the #3 murder capital of the world. Belize City, though I love it, is a crime-riddled dump.

On the global tourism scale, Belize City sadly fails to impress. The nature in Belize is phenomenal, but the services and amenities to enjoy it are sadly lacking and super over-priced.

If Belize wants to be respected, they must act to fix the roads, clean up the filth and crime and make the country emanate “Proud to be Belizean.” The wonderful people (NOT the government officials) of Belize are the only saving grace.
