4 Persons Detained for Murder of Anwar Garbutt in Dangriga

Anwar Garbutt

Four of five persons, including a minor, are in the custody of the Dangriga Police tonight and are likely to be charged for murder in the wake of the vigilante beating of a Belize City resident. On Monday morning, residents from the Back-a-town area in Sabal Community took matters into their own hands and allegedly flogged to death thirty-four year old Anwar Garbutt. Garbutt was reportedly seen exposing his private parts to a five year old girl. According to his family, Garbutt has had a troubled past. The last time they saw him was last Wednesday when he was visiting relatives in Belize City. According to the family, he has been back and forth between the city and Dangriga for the past three to four years. News Five’s Andrea Polanco spoke with the family today.

Will anyone be held responsible for the killing of thirty four year old Anwar Garbutt? Well, that’s what Garbutt’s relatives are hoping for- that the people involved should be charged because they had no right to take the law into their own hands.

Enrique Carillo, Relative of the Deceased

“I nuh know why deh decide to tek matters into fi deh own hands, yuh know weh ah mean. So all like we the family we see it as an injustice because if I go out deh right now and kill somebody deh wah charge me fu murder because if deh now nuh charge nobody fi he murder ih wah cause wah disturbance in the country and in the law hands too because deh wah say the law nuh di do deh job too. Because if deh could gang up on somebody and kill somebody. Deh can’t do things like that and deh have to show a better result as police officer inna Belize City. Cause weh I say what he did wasn’t rightful and what they did neva mek no sense either.”

Andrea Polanco

“Two wrongs?”

Enrique Carillo

Enrique Carillo

“Two wrongs inna one. Dah like weh yuh sey, dah neva first or second time he been through deh act or kinda altercation yuh know. He always get accused of it. He dah neva somebody weh get charged for rape or hurt nobody or murder nobody. So, it kinda hurt to know the way how ih dead because of weh ih do and the people deh see it wrongfully. Deh could ah mi at least hurt ah and mek ih go dah station.”

Andrea Polanco

“But nuh kill ah?”

Enrique Carillo

“But nuh kill ah. Yuh know weh ah mean.”

While family members don’t agree with what he is alleged to have done, they don’t think he should have been killed.

Enrique Carillo

“Things like weh he would do or have done or people would say he does, people would be upset with him and I understand that. Because sometimes from me get upset with ah but.”

Andrea Polanco

“So, you’d say what happened yesterday it’s not justified?”

Enrique Carillo

“It’s outta proportion. That still- I think deh gone too far, too too far. Yuh know weh ah mean mommy? By rights, they should show some justice. I would even say if deh mi bruk ah hand or foot, I dah satisfied with that mek the police dem come pick ah up and do the rest.”

Andrea Polanco

“That’s what the family would have liked; for the residents to call the police to come and pick him up?”

Enrique Carillo

“Yeah. Like weh deh usually do. When deh accuse him ah something the police deh come and pick him and ker ah or do something.”

And rightly so. So far, Dangriga Police are calling it a murder. It is reported that there four persons are in detention and police are looking for at least one other. While Police are hopeful, the family is skeptical about how this play out.

“We enjoy a fairly good relationship and we always at the end of the day, they always come through for us and we believe that at the end of the day they will come through for us and I am certain that they will for us again.”

Enrique Carillo

“According to the officer weh we just spoke to, he said they have four persons in custody nuh but they nuh sure if deh wah get charged or not and I nuh see why deh nuh sure.”

Andrea Polanco

“Why did they say that?”

Enrique Carillo

“Deh say probably deh nuh have solid evidence and nobody want to talk. How come deh wah come across people who fi charge fi this matter? Because even if somebody nuh hurt ah and deh still inna the action, they supposed to get charged.”

Andrea Polanco

“So the family would like to see it be treated as a murder?”

Enrique Carillo

“Sure. If they call the law, law, yuh know weh ah mean? They should do it by law than just mek ih go like that.”

And for Carillo, they say that someone has to speak up for Garbutt. He was abandoned by his mother since he was a toddler and they have come to know and love him as family for thirty plus years despite the demons he battled. But because of those demons, Carillo says that Garbutt’s brutal end could have been predicted.

Enrique Carillo

“He was born and grow as toddler as a relative of mine. His parents just bought him to my grandma one day and leave him to never to return and so my grandma raised him from birth. I would say about three months old. From there we know one another and grew up with each other. We grew up in a good disciplined home and my aunt that we grew up with used to discipline us and teach us right from wrong. But somehow, somewhere, within those years Anwar developed that lee mentality weh…”

Andrea Polanco

“Expressed to you guys that maybe he had mental problem or anything was wrong?”

Enrique Carillo

“That’s exactly what I am trying to explain to you right now. Anwar would talk to you and talk to me just like how I di talk to unu right now. No kinda disturbance mentally, no kinda stutter, no kinda yuh know. That conflict weh he have between he dah just something weh he choose fi do sometimes.”

Andrea Polanco

“And he neva gone fi perhaps a psychiatric evaluation or to see a medical personnel as far as you know?”

Enrique Carillo, Relative of the Deceased

“Well, I guess that dah mi the problem. Nobody neva push ah fi go into it. Which in, I sit down and talk to ah a couple times about it. I mi have to explain to ah that ih betta cut it out because I mi figure ih mi wah be some kinda bitter inna the ending someday yuh know.”
