Former Sugar City Mayor Guilty of Causing Death by Careless Conduct

A jury of five men and four women found former U.D.P. Orange Walk mayor, Ravell Gonzalez guilty of two counts of causing death by careless conduct. The thirty-seven year old was sentenced for a traffic fatality that took the life of two year old Martita Lopez and Manuel Coto on miles thirty-five on the Phillip Goldson Highway back in June of 2008. Gonzalez was on his way from Belize City to his home in Orange Walk, when he hit Lopez and Coto. Late this evening, Justice Traodio Gonzalez imposed non custodial sentences and fined him four thousand dollars for each count. He was also ordered to pay one thousand dollars in compensation to the family of Lopez.

What were the cause or causes surrounding this accident? People need to do their research and the media needs to do positive and effective journalism, especially when these cases drag out like this? When you report, Channel 5, be at the forefront of the news, be effective and efficient. If you don’t know how to, invest in sending your staff to more experienced places where they can become exposed. Unless it’s the immediate family and those having intimate details of this accident seven years ago, no one remembers this. Give an overview of the accident when it happened so people get a generalized idea. Was he drunk, was he driving on the other side of the road, did the vehicle roll over or hit something and were the kids passengers? You get my drift? If he was grossly negligent and or were drunk etc.. why wasn’t he charged with a higher crime? Is a life only worth that in Belize, a thousand dollars?
