Former La Inmaculada General Manager Breaks Silence on Credit Union Debacle

Yolanda Gomez

Since her termination as general manager of the beleaguered La Inmaculada Credit Union on July twenty-seventh, erstwhile head of operations Yolanda Gomez has broken her silence on the issues that are clouding the lending institution. The membership of the credit union has been clamoring for answers on her termination and other matters, which the credit union has promised they will answer at its next Annual General Meeting.  After twenty-four years of service to La Inmaculada, Gomez was placed on administrative leave by its board of directors in April.  The decision to suspend Gomez preceded an investigation by the Central Bank of Belize and a financial external auditor.  The result of that probe indicates that there were “strong indications of non-compliance with proper banking procedures, coupled with improper and questionable decisions taken by Gomez during her tenure.” Today, in a sit-down with the media in Orange Walk Town, Gomez responded to several questions.

Yolanda Gomez, Former General Manager, LICU

“I would ask your patience and the patience of the membership and the public at large as it is a pending situation and it is actually in the hands of my lawyer. I am very moved by the support of the members. I’ve been learning through the media that they garnered over twelve hundred signatures. I heard Miss Estella saying there are more people wanting to sign and I don’t doubt that. I am pretty sure that the membership can appreciate all the good that I’ve done for the institution, all the good that we have accomplished together because without the membership, it would not be possible. So I would like to sincerely thank them from the bottom of my heart for their unwavering support. The membership, the public at large, has always believed in me and I thank them ever so much for that and I want to implore that they continue believing in me, especially those who are coordinating the effort. I am really humble and appreciative of the fact that the membership has not lost fate in me and I promise them that soon I’ll be able to share my side of the story. We’ve been able to reach out to the rural areas where the people need mostly our services and we’ve gained, during my tenure, the respect from even international agencies that have seen the promise, have seen the possibilities of the La Inmaculada Credit Union reaching out and meeting their objectives that they decided themselves to even invest in us because of the confidence and our operations. And those are our accomplishments, those are our success stories we can proudly boast about and it was with combined effort of every stakeholder.”

Gomez did not confirm if she will be taking legal action against the credit union.

As much as she contributed to the growth of LICU she refused to partake and help out with the internal audit which certainly does not help her image. Only looks as a petty theif now
