P.U.P. Women Support Francis Fonseca

Lisa Shoman

But before the letter was delivered, today the women of the People’s United Party, including four standard bearers, a senator and the head of the women’s group, held a press conference, ostensibly to discuss critical issues facing the nation. But in truth, the gathering is a public relations response to increasing rumbles of discontent in the People’s United Party. Fonseca’s supporters are pushing back…or at least the women of the party are fighting his case.

Lisa Shoman, Senator, People’s United Party

“One of the reasons that we feel so comfortable about speaking out as the women of the People’s United Party is that we have a party leader who listens, who is prepared to consult with all levels of the party and all party organs and to hear from not only People’s United Party members, but all Belizeans as to what it is that we believe that is important not only for the women of Belize, but for the national of Belize.”

“His leadership is inclusive. He listens to all sides and then makes informed decisions, not hasty ones. Francis Fonseca has never sought fame, he has never become arrogant, egotistical or power hungry. He has always served with the best interest of Belize and the Belizean people first and he has served all Belizeans—not P.U.P.’s first, U.D.P.’s second and Belizeans last. He serves everyone, equally.”

“Under honourable Francis Fonseca leadership, the party has realized many significant changes. It has decentralized and strengthened its national executive; has taken firm position on national issue; put forward its economy governance, education and health plan and its women’s agenda. Brothers and sisters of the great People’s United Party, the party of warriors, the party that led this country to independence, the party that said no to Guatemala and continues to say no to Guatemala. We must stand together, we must fight together, we must not allow the U.D.P. to continue to use their baits and bleed tactics to try to destroy us; to use our very own to try to destroy us. Today, we must say no; no more. Today we stand united with honourable Francis Fonseca.”

“It is time for us to break the silence and confront our fears. The difference is clear. Let us exercise our power because power does not belong to a single or group of persons; it belongs to you the nation of Belize. It is your right, it is our right; it is the right of our children. Rise up and together along with the People’s United Party let us save our country.”

“Having heard our colleagues this morning, it only falls to me to issue the call for hard work, solidarity and moving forward. I would like to call on all colleagues, all standard bearers of the People’s United Party, everyone interested in having a positive change in this country to pull up our sleeves, put our shoulders to the wheel and get to work.”
