Grieving Mother of Deceased Cancer Patient is Thankful for Public Support

Angela Smith

But Angela Smith has lost her battle to cancer. Back in March, her mother Michelle Smith was at our studios asking for assistance for Angela, who was diagnosed with cancer of the liver. She managed to raise the necessary funds to send Angela to the U.S. for the much needed medical care. Unfortunately, on Sunday, July nineteenth, after four months of treatment, Smith lost her battle to cancer. She was admitted at the USC California Medical Center in Los Angeles on March eighteenth, but her situation was dire; surgery on her liver was not an option and due to complications, chemotherapy was delayed.  But on Friday, she fell gravely ill and was hospitalized. Her condition took a turn for the worse and she succumbed to on Sunday, the day she was to return to Belize. For her mother, Michelle, it is heart-wrenching because Smith has left behind two daughters: three year old Suriah and four month old Semiah Walford. A grieving Michelle told News Five today that she is grateful for the support she received.

Michelle Smith, Mother of Deceased

“Although it is a very sad time for myself and her two children that she left behind and the family, I want to thank everybody because without your support, she wouldn’t have been able to get to America, she wouldn’t have been able to get the assistance that she needed. I want to thank the family in America that housed her; that took care of her like she was their own. I want to thank everybody that donated and assisted me in this time. Her funeral will be sometime next week; hopefully by this weekend, the body will come home. She was diagnosed with liver cancer. Just after her four month old baby was born, she had more severe pains and when she was rushed to emergency, they found out it was cancer. At that point, the cancer was already…she already had two tumors and one of them was the size of a grapefruit. So she went to America for surgery, but when she got there, it was told to us that she wouldn’t make it out of surgery…too much of her liver would have to come off so she couldn’t do surgery. She was waiting to do chemo, but her blood was low and she was weak so they kept extending the date for chemo. So she never did do chemo and so the prognosis and deterioration took about four months and she succumbed. It has been there for many years. Actually since she was born she got blood and that was what introduced it to her liver. It was the last pregnancy that triggered the growth of the cancer and she started to have pain, started to lose weight rapidly and she had pain in her belly bottom and they said it was kidney infection. This was while she was pregnant. She was actually in the hospital about three or four times with pain and they said it was premature labor and so they gave her something to stop the contractions and the pain just got worse and worse. After the baby was born, the pain was unbearable. The hospital said it was stones. When they went in to look for stones, they found tumors. I’m left with her two babies—Suriah who is three years old and Semiah who is four months old. They are now my responsibility; they have a father that is active in their lives; helps in any way that he can and they have me now. I will do anything I can in my power to make sure that they have a good life.”
