Former Benque Mayor Arrested in Melchor Holds Guatemalan Nationality

Wilfred Elrington

There is another recent arrest by Guatemalan authorities. On July eleventh, 2015, Benque Viejo businessman and former Mayor, Edgar Contreras was arrested in Guatemala for having a gun not registered in that country. Contreras, who is cousin of Minister Erwin Contreras, reportedly keeps a licensed firearm because of his job as a money changer. On the day of his detention, he had crossed the western border with the gun on him and while the Guatemalan police carried out searches in the market area of Melchor, the gun was found on Contreras and he was subsequently charged and released. We asked Minister Elrington on the status of this case and he told us that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs acted swiftly to assist Contreras who also holds Guatemalan nationality.

Wilfred Elrington, Minister of Foreign Affairs

“My own information is that as soon as word was received of his arrest our ambassador went into full gear to make sure that he was properly looked at. It was subsequently reported to me that he is supposed to have Guatemalan nationality. So two things he is suppose to have Guatemalan nationality he was able to produce documentation testifying to that and of course it’s a regular offense. If you go there with a weapon that is not licensed by them, they are going to arrest you. I can tell you if a Guatemalan were to come across to Belize and were in fact in possession of an unlicensed firearm; he will also be arrested and would have to go through due process here in Belize. So it is not abnormal, remember not too long we had a Belizean who went across to Mexico, in fact more than one and they were arrested and charged and processed and that is normal. People from the United States go to Mexico they are arrested, people from Mexico go to the Unites States they are arrested, that is normal among border, countries that has common borders.”

“So Mr. Contreras will have to go through due process?”

Wilfred Elrington

“To my mind, but I can assure you that up to the time when we in fact discovered that he has Guatemalan nationality our ambassador was on top of things, he seems to have facility with the authorities over there and can work wonders, and we thank him for that but the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is right on top of it. That’s an area that we don’t hesitate, that’s why we have ambassadors there and we act with a lot of speed.”

Ok…so someone educate me…I know that we can have more than one nationality like American/Belizean but I think I have read that the exception is if you are Guatemalan. I once assisted a Guatemalan get their Belizean passports had to surrender the Guatemalan passport and declare that you are refusing being a Guatemalan citizen…or do these rules not apply to elected officials????
