Will Early General Elections Be Called? Ask U.D.P. Ground Commander, Boots Martinez

Anthony “Boots” Martinez

There is speculation that given the state of affairs within the Opposition party, Prime Minister Dean Barrow will again call general elections before the current term expires to secure an unprecedented third term in office.  It is all speculative this time, but with the bulging coffers and significant victories this year, the idea is surely percolating in the PM’s mind. On Thursday, we asked senior minister, Anthony “Boots” Martinez about this possibility.

“Has the U.D.P. made a decision on when they will have a general election?”

“No not yet, but we haven’t made one. But in my personal view, I think that is sooner rather than later. But in my view, the U.D.P. hasn’t made that decision.”

“Okay, but it is something under discussion by senior people in the U.D.P.?”

Anthony “Boots” Martinez

“I think at party level those are the discussions that we need to hold. When you look at the campaign manager the resign—in my view, the P.U.P. in shambles—having known in my view, presenting no platform for the people of Belize; like for example, all you hear about is what they perceive the U.D.P. is doing wrong. Not even setting up a format to say lawd, unu di roll Petrocaribe, unu di do two hundred street, we wah do four hundred. All dehn di say is that this is not right; this, that. The easiest thing for anybody to do is criticize. What people want, if you think there is a problem is the solution to the problem? And I think that if you can’t get yo house straight internally, I can’t see how yo could come outside and look good.”
