So What’s The Status Of The FOB?

Wilfred Elrington

So the fate of the Forward Operating Base now lies in the hands of the O.A.S., and the territorial integrity of Belize will lie in the hands of the ICJ, if and when the dispute goes before that tribunal. For now, everything seems to be on hold, and Elrington says that is how it will stay until the matter is resolved, once and for all.

Wilfred Elrington, Ministry of Foreign Affairs

“There is no possibility of Guatemala winning any victory at this point in time in relation to the Sarstoon Island or any other part of Belize because now that we have agreed to go to the ICJ everything is really at a standstill. Nobody will be able to get any advantage by taking any action at this point in time. The path to the ICJ has already been put in motion, so whatever we do right now is not going to impact the decision that will be taken by the ICJ, so they are not going to get any unfair advantage. That is not my understanding at all. And I must say to you that it is not my sense that what is going on has anything to do with any intention on their part to get any unfair advantage. That is not my sense. We have no indication of that.”

“Sir could you give us an idea what happens now on the ground? Has there been any move from Foreign Affairs or National Security to tell the Coast Guard you know what…until we discuss this thing at the O.A.S. in the next couple days or couple weeks let’s just hold off…”

Wilfred Elrington

“Normally the practice with the Government of Belize is for decisions to be taken at the Cabinet level and at the level of the National Security Council. So we have a meeting of the National Security Council and we take a particular decision, then we go to the Cabinet and indicate to the Cabinet that this is in fact the decision of the national Security Council, and then that decision is endorsed by the Cabinet.”

Reporter

“Has there been any instruction given to the Coast Guard or the B.D.F. or whoever would patrol in that area to pull back a little until we deal with this thing at the O.A.S.?”

Wilfred Elrington

“It is not my understanding that that has happened. I have no knowledge that any such instruction has been given.”
