Murder: Body Found In Shallow Grave in the Springfield Area

Stephanie Grinage

Turning to crime; the discovery of a badly decomposed body on Wednesday morning in a shallow grave several miles outside the Mennonite community of Springfield, has resulted in the detention of at least two persons.  Sometime around five a.m., a taskforce comprised of various units of the police department was deployed into an area off the Hummingbird Highway.  After negotiating a rugged path into the dense forest, the officers came across the grave measuring approximately six feet by three feet.  Buried inside were the hacked remains of an elderly farmer, believed to have been butchered during an altercation with the trio sometime last month.  Sixty-one-year-old Osmar Ramos, a naturalized Belizean from El Salvador, was never reported missing by friends and family.  In fact, his sibling only became aware of the tragedy when she was visited by Belmopan police later that day, in the wake of the discovery.  News Five spoke by phone with Inspector Stephanie Grinage, Deputy Officer Commanding the Belmopan Police Formation.  According to the senior officer, charges are expected to be brought against the men in custody.

On the phone: Insp. Stephanie Grinage, Deputy O.C., Belmopan Police

“On the fifteenth of July, acting on intelligence received, three specialized units and Belmopan police visited an area situated five miles off the Hummingbird Highway, south of Springfield in the Cayo District.  Police discovered a shallow grave with the decomposed body of one Osmar Ramos, sixty-one-years-old of Paraiso, in the same Springfield area.  Investigations reveal that Ramos was killed sometime in the month of June.  Two persons are presently in police custody and are likely to be charged.”

“Have you guys been able to ascertain a motive as to why Mr. Ramos was killed in this fashion?”

On the phone: Insp. Stephanie Grinage

“Yes, the investigation is revealing that there was a fight amongst the individuals and that’s what caused the death of Mr. Ramos.”

Isani Cayetano

“Have you been able to get in contact with the family of this particular individual, seeing as though my understanding is that there was not a missing person’s report filed for over a month or so?”

On the phone: Insp. Stephanie Grinage

“Yes sir, we have contacted a relative, a sister, who lives in the Las Flores area and they are dealing with the matter.”

Isani Cayetano

“Can you give us additional information with regards to this incident, anything that we may be able to use as newsworthy?”

On the phone: Insp. Stephanie Grinage

“An onsite post mortem was conducted by doctors and Mr. Ramos had multiple chop wounds to the upper part of his body.  I would just like to ask the public, thank the public for their assistance in this investigation.”

An onsite autopsy revealed that Ramos was chopped multiple times to the body, including the neck, back of the head, shoulder and chin.
