Undocumented Cubans Arrested

Stephanie Grinage

A constant trickle of illegal Cuban immigrants into Belize, presumably with aid from a local human trafficking ring, has resulted in yet another bust in the Cayo District, this time near Roaring Creek.  A predawn spot check conducted by Belmopan police has led to the arrest of eleven individuals, including their handlers, during separate operations. The first involved a group of eight traveling in the direction of San Ignacio Town.  When the vehicle was pulled over six of its occupants were unable to produce documents authorizing their entrance in the country.  In a subsequent operation, a passenger bus was also stopped at that checkpoint where it was soon discovered that four undocumented Cubans were heading west in the company of a Salvadoran national.  According to Inspector Stephanie Grinage, all eleven persons remain in police custody in Belmopan pending charges.

On the phone: Insp. Stephanie Grinage, Deputy O.C., Belmopan Police

“On the sixteenth of July, around four a.m., acting on information [received], police set up a checkpoint in Roaring Creek Village and intercepted a vehicle coming from an east to west direction.  The said vehicle was occupied by two Belizeans and six Cuban nationals who were undocumented.  All persons were escorted to the Belmopan station pending immigration charges at this time.  Shortly after that check, a passenger bus was checked where one Salvadoran and four Cuban nationals were found without proper documentation also.  They were all escorted to the Belmopan station also for immigration offenses.”

“Do you have any names or stuff that we can use?”

On the phone: Insp. Stephanie Grinage

“At this time the [Immigration Department] is doing its investigation so I will not call the names at this time.”

A group of twenty Cuban nationals and their agent was recently busted in Orange Walk Town and charged for similar immigration offences.
