K.H.M.H. Personnel on Go-Slow

Employees of K.H.M.H. are staging a go-slow on Friday and will not be accepting any referrals to the hospital in protest of being excluded from a recent salary adjustment for teachers and public officers.   The long awaited salary adjustment comes after months of negotiating with government.  But while the unions are benefiting from an increase in monthly wages, nurses and doctors, as well as other members of staff at the K.H.M.H. are being left out of the fourteen percent raise.   A late-afternoon meeting was held today where employees voiced concerns and displeasure with government’s move to exclude them from the adjustment.  Whereas the unions engaged in dialogue with government through its Joint Negotiating Team, hospital workers aren’t unionized and therefore were never included in those discussions.  Despite being autonomous, wages at the K.H.M.H. are being paid by government, leading employees to believe that they should be included in the adjustment.

A release issued moments ago says that for the first time, representatives of the Board of Governors from the K.H.M.H. Authority met with members of cabinet to discuss issues pertaining to salary increases, pensions and benefits.  According to the release, at the top of the agenda was the six percent salary increase granted to public officers in 2014, but which was not granted to K.H.M.H. employees and subsequent increases.  The employees also confirmed that as of this Friday, all outpatient elective services and surgeries referred to the hospital will be cancelled. Only referral services and specialities that are not available at the district hospitals will be undertaken.
