Belize City Man Acquitted Of 2010 Murder

Devon Sankey

Twenty-two year old Devon Sankey walked free on Wednesday for the murder of Renan Reneau which happened back in April 2010. A no case submission was put forth to the court by Sankey’s attorney, Oscar Selgado, which Judge Troadio Gonzalez upheld. The crown’s main witness and girlfriend of Reneau, Arilee Sommerville, told the court that the statement police provided in trial didn’t reflect what she said. Somerville informed the court that at the time she signed the paper, but informed the police that she wasn’t satisfied with the content that they recorded and neither did she finger Sankey to be the gunman. Here’s how attorney Selgado explains it.

“The prosecution’s main witness, key witness, testified that the written submission at the preliminary inquiry was not what she had in fact given to the police; that she made it known to the police at the time that having read the statement to her most of what was inside the document was not what she related to the police and the police insisted that she signed it. She did so, but with caution that she didn’t agree with the content of it. In court, she stood by her testimony that in fact most of what was said in that deposition was not her words. She further gave evidence that at no time did she identify Devon Sankey, by name or other description, to the police as the person whom she saw fleeing from the scene on the night the killing occurred on April eighth, 2010. She further testified under cross examination that at no time did she indicate to the police that Devon Sankey was a suspect, by her or her family, in relation to the murder. With that piece of evidence, the prosecution declared and applied the main witness to be hostile. It didn’t go any better for the prosecution because that was the only person who saw in the prosecution evidence what occurred.  I did at the end of the prosecution’s case, made a no case submission, which Honorable Justice Gonzalez upheld and he so ruled that Devon Sankey had no case to answer and therefore wasn’t guilty for the crime of murder.”

Reneau was shot four times to the upper body while at Sommerville’s house on Kut Avenue. Sankey was only seventeen years old at the time of the killing.
