Myvette Family Not Allowed to View Autopsy

Kevin Parks

On Saturday night, twenty-eight year old Hope Creek resident Leopold Myvette was gunned down by Police officers who fired at least eight shots at him. Their story is that when they approached a group of men in front of Fuentes Bar in the community, Myvette pulled out what appeared to be a firearm and pointed it at them, and that’s when they fired on him. But that story has some holes in it. Multiple witnesses claim that when Police approached Myvette he had no gun, but they still fired and hit him in the leg, after which he took off behind the bar. And that’s when the officers allegedly followed and finished him off. Interestingly, a gun was found, but not on Myvette. Officers reportedly found it near a basketball court in front of the bar, even though Myvette ran behind the bar when he was wounded. The complicated story has the family of Myvette furious, and today the fury and frustration were exacerbated when Police refused to allow them to view the autopsy.

“The officer in charge right now explained to us that they would get us in – they asked in a way like if we think we could stomach what would take place in the room itself. We explained yes, that I would do it. They took my information down, they took me inside of the room, and all they had me do was identify the body – the name of the person, his occupation and that was it. From there they led me back outside. So I turned around and asked them that I thought they explained to me that one of us would be in the room to view the autopsy. Why I bring this up is that one – they autopsy the body and we don’t know how many bullets the body received. How will we know if more bullets were in the body? Maybe they found him and finished him off. Secondly, we would have wanted to see the body to see exactly where the bullet entered, whether it was the front or the back because when you watch the interview when the incident happened, they claimed that the guy had a gun, but yet, before the guy was shot and ran away, they were playing like when you watch Westerns…like how the cowboy do to Indians where they shoot by your feet and you bounce. Obviously if you put a cow in a pasture and a bee stings him on his backside, he will bolt. He will take off. Are you telling me that it gives the owner of the cow the right to chase that cow and slaughter it, because he doesn’t know why it ran? You did something wrong to it and that why it will run.”
