Contreras Detained in Guatemala for Unlicensed Firearm

George Lovell

Former Benque Viejo Mayor Edgar ‘Whitey’ Contreras was detained in Guatemala on Saturday after being found in possession of an unregistered firearm in that jurisdiction.  While the handgun is licensed for personal use in Belize, Contreras was well within the boundaries of Melchor de Mencos when a search of his person yielded the weapon.  The cousin of Cayo West area representative Erwin Contreras remains in police custody, while a legal team is dealing with the matter on his behalf.  So, where does the Ministry of National Security stand on the issue of Contreras’ detention?  On the sideline. According to C.E.O. George Lovell, the matter is entirely out of the scope of his ministry and that due process will be allowed to run its course.

Ret. Col. George Lovell, C.E.O., Ministry of National Security

“I was informed, I think it was on Saturday evening, that sometime around after five p.m. that Mr. Contreras was detained by Guatemalan police officers.  Initially, I thought that it was something that happened in the area of the OAS facility.  It was confirmed to me later that it was well within Guatemala and that while our foreign affairs people were working along with the Guatemalan officials, that it clearly is a matter for the Guatemalan authorities to deal with.  We, because of the fact that it occurred well in Guatemala, it’s a matter for Mr. Contreras and his legal people to deal with that.  We will be talking to them, this is our police along with their police to find out how the case is going along and what he has been charged for and how that is progressing, but beyond that we are not interfering with their procedures.”

It is expected that Contreras will be fined in a local court in Melchor before being released and returned to Belize.
