Gardenia Man Sentenced to 12 Years in Prison for Gun, Ammunition & Drugs

Anthony Zelaya

A man from Gardenia is spending the first night of twelve years behind bars after he took the rap for a prohibited weapon, ammunition and drugs found in his home. The items were discovered during an early morning raid and search by the Rural Rapid Response Team operating out of the Rural Eastern Division. When officers descended on the home of twenty-three year old Anthony Zelaya, they discovered a sawed-off sixteen gauge shotgun, four live rounds and one hundred and five grams of cannabis. Along with Zelaya in the home were his brother Nelson Zelaya, sister Arlene and friend Nicole Moody. All four were hauled before Chief Magistrate Ann Marie Smith this morning to be charged. But immediately upon being read the charges, Anthony Zelaya took responsibility for the gun, ammo and weed. The prosecution decided not to pursue the charges against the other three, and with that they were free to go. Anthony Zelaya, however, was not. He was sentenced to seven years for the shotgun and seven years for the ammunition, to run concurrently. For the drug trafficking charge, he was ordered to pay ten thousand dollars immediately or in default, five years in prison. That’s a total of twelve years, since Zelaya was unable to put his hands on ten thousand dollars.
