Artist Share Murder Count

The official murder stats for the first half of the year is yet to be released by the Police Department, but we can surely say that 2015 is one of the most murderous years and that Belize has recently been named the fourth most dangerous country in the world. On Monday, artist Katie Usher took to a chalkboard and wrote down a list of the names and ages of persons who have lost their lives to gun violence since the beginning of the year. It inspired us to take a look at the numbers we have recorded to date and those figures are damning. According to our stats, there have been a total of seventy-four murders since the start of the year. April and May tally the highest numbers with nineteen and sixteen homicides, respectively. January, on the other hand, had only five murders with June recording eight. Even more disconcerting is that the age of the victims has dropped significantly and the youths are being killed on the regular—the youngest was two-year-old Charlie Espat from San Pedro. As a youth herself, Usher created this piece entitled “Wall.”
