Youth Riddled With Bullets on Central American Blvd.

Anthony Smith

The relentless spate of gun violence in the Old Capital continued this weekend, leaving one person dead and another clinging to life in separate armed assaults.  On Friday night, an eighteen-year-old youth was mercilessly shot and killed on Central American Boulevard.  Despite the presence of police in the area, the gunman pulled off a daring escape after opening fire on the responding officers.  The grieving family of Anthony Smith remains at a loss for words, admitting only that he had been sent on a brief errand for his mother when he met his untimely demise.  News Five’s Isani Cayetano has that story.

What should have been a quick run to purchase fast food at a popular eatery has resulted in tragedy, as another Belize City family is left to grieve the loss of a loved one.  Eighteen-year-old Anthony Smith had been on an errand to Li Chee Restaurant on Friday night and was expected to return home promptly.  Instead, he was gunned down by a lone assailant on the other side of town, quite a distance away from where he had been sent to buy fried chicken.

Supt. Hilberto Romero, O.C., C.I.B., Belize City Police

“Around 8:50 p.m. police personnel visited the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital where they saw Anthony Smith, eighteen-years-old, with multiple gunshots to the abdomen, to the chest and one gunshot wound to the head.  He was pronounced dead thereafter and an investigation was carried out.  Information is that he was riding a bicycle on Central American Boulevard near the intersection with Freedom Street when he was approached by a male person who fired several shots at him.”

The deadly attack on the teenager has led many to question the motive behind the shooting.  A police investigation into Smith’s murder succeeds the flight of the gunman, who turned his weapon on a duo of responding officers during his escape.

“Police personnel were in the immediate area, they pursued one person and there was an exchange of gunshots and that led to the recovery of a nine millimeter pistol and the suspect fled from the area.”

“Are you able to tell us, in terms of the vicinity of how close these officers were to where the shooting happened?”

Supt. Hilberto Romero

“Okay they were a couple yards from where the shooting happened.  That is there patrol area and when they heard the shots they responded but the person still managed to escape from the area.”

“Do you know at this time what motivated this attack against Mr. Smith?”

Supt. Hilberto Romero

“Yeah, this individual had some problems with some guys in that area.  The information we gathered is that he had received some threats that culminated with him being shot to death at that area.”

The impudence with which the killer struck and dispatched his quarry exemplifies an utter disregard for law enforcement.  A team on foot patrol was not too far away, beneath a bus shed a few dozen yards behind.

Supt. Hilberto Romero

“I can mention that there were officers in that area.  They were the ones that responded but by the time they arrived at the exact location the person had already made some gains on them and was far away.  Some shots, I know, were fired but he was never caught.  The nine millimeter pistol was found somewhere in that general area where the exchange of gunshots [happened].”

News Five has attempted to get a comment from Smith’s family but they have respectfully declined.  Meanwhile, an investigation into the latest homicide remains ongoing. Reporting for News Five, I am Isani Cayetano.
