Did the P.U.P.’s Inner Circle Affect Outcome of Dangriga Bye-elections?

Is there an inextricable link between the new pecking order of the People’s United Party and that of the previous regime led by Said Musa?  Well, that’s an assertion put to Francis Fonseca during Thursday’s post bye-election media brief.  The bold suggestion that the P.U.P.’s inner circle remains relatively unchanged since 2008 got the party leader hot under the collar, particularly when asked about the influence of the Musas and the Castillos within the existing chain of command.  According to Fonseca, the most recent defeat at the polls has little to do with the party’s choice of candidate, neither is the loss attributable to the rank of the party.

“I’m saying that the linkage between the 2015 party and the 2008 party is quite significant.  I can list you ten names or fifteen names who are…”

Francis Fonseca, Party Leader, P.U.P.

“No, you can’t.  No, you can’t.”

Francis Fonseca

Reporter

“You want me to list them?”

Francis Fonseca

“We have more new candidates than the United Democratic Party today, in 2015.”

Reporter

“Sir, you have people who are directly linked.  You cannot say there’s a, you cannot convince the voters that there is a big difference between Karim Musa and Said Musa or Valdemar Castillo and Valdemar Castillo.”

Francis Fonseca

“Ahuh, what is your problem with Karim Musa and David Castillo?  What is your problem with them?”

Reporter

“I like them a lot…”

Francis Fonseca

“So what is your point?  What is your point?”

Reporter

“I’m trying to find out sir, what is the problem.  The candidate isn’t the problem, the resources aren’t the problem.  Isn’t then the leadership…”

Francis Fonseca

“The problem, Jules, is, as we said, you don’t want to look and assess the context of this election but it’s important.  The problem is that we had a very good candidate who did not have the proper time to mount a full campaign in Dangriga and if he had that opportunity to campaign for months he would have won those elections.  I am absolutely confident of that.  So these are elections being orchestrated by Mr. Barrow and the UDP for the very purpose of trying to undermine the People’s United Party.  Clearly in our view, and so yes, both these elections were held within the period of a month or so and we have every confidence, we have every confidence that we have to work on all of those elements that I talked about.”

Jules is right and Francis Fonseca knows it. Said Musa and his clan are an albatros around the neck of the party. I have never liked Mark Espat and will never like or forgive him for being such a selfish sob. But u can’t call the man stupid. When Ralph and Said gave him 1/4 tank of gas to drive around the whole around last election cycle, he smartly turned down the leadership.
The truth is that Francis Fonseca mis-read the results of the last election. He did well because he struck the right tone. Apologize for the past, promise something better and new i.e no to neoliberalism, yes to honest government, a return to the mixed economy.
He then proceeded to undo all of that by listening to Said Musa and having him front and centre in everything PUP. Said is Kryptonite and hence the party has regressed. This is just a major strategic dunce move! The UDP were ripe for the taking and he has blown it!
