P.U.P. Fortified Despite Defeat at the Polls

Francis Fonseca

Despite losing almost a quarter of its constituents since the 2012 general elections, Fonseca says the party is encouraged by its accomplishment on Wednesday given the circumstances leading up to the bye-elections.

Francis Fonseca, Party Leader, P.U.P.

“We have a good candidate, we have to be better organized, we need even more resources and we need to fine tune our message and make that message more effective and deliver it in a more effective way.  But I don’t think we should be overstating what took place there in Dangriga.  It was an election called within a very short period of time for a man who had never run for electoral politics and the government came in with millions of dollars to spend on the ground in Dangriga, Sarawee and Hope Creek.  That is the reality of what happened and in that context we are encouraged by the way our party performed.”

“That’s an incredible statement sir, you all lost thirteen percent which means that’s one quarter of your support.  You had fifty-four percent and you’re now down to forty-one, that’s a quarter of the support of the P.U.P. just three years ago is now gone.  How can that be an encouragement?”

Francis Fonseca

“We are absolutely encouraged by the fact that, as I said, that we have a very good candidate, we believe that the spirit of unity and organization is back.  So we have to build on that, we have to build on that.  And again sir, you are saying that 2012 and 2015 as if nothing happened in between.  We had our candidate resign from the National Assembly and this was a bye-election, it was a bye-election which was called in a very short period of time and in that context it is no surprise, it should not shock anyone that the governing party was able to win that election.”
