PM Steadfast on Petrocaribe Funds, Elections Results are Proof

Dean Barrow

This is the third significant election victory for the United Democratic Party just this year – the Cayo North bye-election in January, followed by the municipals in March and now the by-election in Dangriga. For Prime Minister Dean Barrow, there’s no greater sign of confidence that the U.D.P. is doing the right thing, even when the government comes under constant attack for things like the Petrocaribe Loans Act. According to the PM…the constant, overwhelming shows of support are pointing the way straight to the promised land – in this case, general elections which likely will be called sooner rather than later.

“If indeed the margin was extremely small, we would have to wheel and come again. It’s big enough that indeed we have…I don’t want to say bragging rights because I’m trying to be measured…but it gives us a great deal of comfort – I repeat that it gives us a great deal of encouragement. It shows that people in this country are loyal to you if they believe that you’re serving them well. So in respect to continuing to move forward and not getting distracted by that anti-government campaign – which no doubt will continue – this is a wonderful boost to the United Democratic Party government. When you’re this close to a general election and there are these elections beforehand if people are not with you the results tell you that. You can’t get around it. From certainly since January, the March municipals and now it’s a continuing straight line despite the everyday bombardment, the continuing relentless assault in terms of the media, in terms of the oppositionists. No man! If that were having an effect it would have told at the polls. It’s not, so again I want to say absolute thanks and praise to the people of this constituency and the people of the country for their continuing confidence in the U.D.P.  We are going to continue to live up to and vindicate that confidence.”
