Barrow Comments on Latest Secret Recording from Hulse

Dean Barrow

On Tuesday night we told you about a recording – another recording – of senior U.D.P. former Minister Melvin Hulse. In that recording Hulse claims that the U.D.P. will need to buy the Dangriga election because Frank “Pawpa” Mena will lose if they do not do so. More than that, Hulse makes very bold allegations against Mena – in fact alleging that his U.D.P. colleague is involved in serious criminal activity. Following the release of the first, explosive Hulse recording, Prime Minister Dean Barrow dropped the axe and Hulse resigned. But notwithstanding that, Hulse still had a place in the U.D.P.  Today, he told News Five that his position may have changed in that regard.

Mike Rudon

“Sir and in terms of Melvin Hulse, you had indicated that he will be welcomed back into the U.D.P. fold. Has this new recording changed that?”

Prime Minister Dean Barrow

“I haven’t heard the recording and if what I’ve been told of it is true, it certainly will cause me to rethink my position. You cannot—what he said about me is fine—you cannot make those sorts of absolutely outrageous statements against somebody, who hopefully will be the next area representative for Dangriga and expect to coexist easily with such a person inside the U.D.P. So I have to rethink my position.”

Reporter

“Sir, you’ve taken into consideration that that may come from the very same recording that was made, for which he has already apologized and said it is not true.”

Prime Minister Dean Barrow

“Yes, but we didn’t get this aspect of it—if it is the same recording, it may well be—we didn’t get this aspect of it. And because that was not then in evidence, my position in reaction to Melvin Hulse was what it was. With this new revelation, all I am saying is I have to rethink my position.”

Reporter

“Sir, would that in any way affect the person that he himself has given a nod to, in terms of the chairman of the Stann Creek West Committee is it?”

Prime Minister Dean Barrow

“I wouldn’t think so. Nathan Young is somebody that is well able to stand on his two feet and I don’t believe that this will interfere in any way with the extremely competitive race I expect to see him run in our convention.”

Reporter

“Sir, has Melvin Hulse spoken with you personally since that recording and since his apology?”

Prime Minister Dean Barrow

“No, no. Not since we spoke after the last disclosure. In terms of what happened yesterday or two days ago, no I have not had a chance to speak with him.”
