6 Prisoners Escape from the Benque Viejo Jail

Six Honduran nationals have escaped from the Benque Viejo Police Station—only one has been recaptured up to news time. Did they have help from the inside? Well, that’s what we asked police today after six persons got away from under their noses. The men, twenty-one year old Darwin Josue Turcios Caceres, eighteen year old Jose Antonio Vasquez, twenty-three year old Jocsan Adbeel Aguilar, twenty-two year old Wilmer Junior Bermudez, twenty-three year old Johnny Abel Ramos and twenty-eight year old Isaias Concepcion Morales were all detained for entering the country illegally. The men, it is believed, entered along the banks of the Mopan River at the Belize-Guatemala border. Well, they were at the police station and escaped, but no one noticed until a huge hole was discovered in the wall. Police say they recaptured Vasquez walking towards San Ignacio Town around three this afternoon. As for the other five, they may be long gone. So who will take responsibility? Officer in Charge in Benque, Assistant Superintendent Daniel Arzu, explained all of that and more when Andrea Polanco spoke with him by phone today.

On the Phone: Supt. Daniel Arzu, O.C, Benque Viejo Police

“Our officers made physical checks at the cell block and upon making checks they realized that there were no prisoners inside the particular cell block that was occupied by the Honduran prisoners, national prisoners. They conducted a physical check and observed that the rear portion of the cell wall was damaged and there was hole- which we believed they exited from and made good their escape nuh.”

“Any of the officers there heard anything? Do you have in place any officer who is guarding these persons who are detained there?”

On the Phone: Supt. Daniel Arzu

“Yes. There are prisoners who conducted regular checks on prisoners who are in our custody for the purpose of their safety that they are well, healthy and alive, and that’s when the officers went to conduct physical checks and they weren’t in the cell.”

Andrea Polanco

“Are you able to say how they managed to break that wall or able to pass through. Did they use any tools or anything to escape?”

On the Phone: Supt. Daniel Arzu

“From our observation, it is obvious that some hard object was used to break that wall. We are currently investigating the matter and to get the information we need to take the appropriate action thereafter.”

Andrea Polanco

“O.C., at any point or any chance you believe that these persons had help from someone within the Benque Viejo Police Station?”

On the Phone: Supt. Daniel Arzu

“Ummm…I will dispel that simply because our investigation is speaking to something else other than the police officers being part and parcel of whatever it is. What clearly can be observed is that there may be negligence on behalf of the police officers, but the reality is that action will be taken in that regard in respect of such negligence.”

Andrea Polanco

“Are you able to share with us a timeline from when they were detained up to the point that they escaped?”

On the Phone: Supt. Daniel Arzu

“Well, actually four of those prisoners were arrested from within Benque Viejo Town. They were moving suspiciously and the police took them into custody and realized that they were Honduran nationals and they entered the country illegally. The following day, additional two were caught exiting the town on a bus and they, again, were escorted to Benque Viejo Police Station where they were held pending immigration offences. So, Immigration authorities were contacted and they were there for the purpose of processing and during that period of time they made good their escape.”

Andrea Polanco

“Okay, if you are able to tell us, what time did they escape more or less that day?”

On the Phone: Supt. Daniel Arzu

“The encounter was made just after eight p.m.”

Andrea Polanco

“Last night?”

On the Phone: Supt. Daniel Arzu

“Last night yes.”

Andrea Polanco

“So, you don’t have an idea of where they may be at this time?”

On the Phone: Supt. Daniel Arzu

“Umm… we have gotten certain information, as a matter of fact, an hour ago we have apprehended one of those very same Honduran national prisoners, right. So, we have one of them in our custody and we are pursuing our investigation and will be exploring all are of leads so that the necessary action is taken to that regard.”
