P.U.P. Leader Predicts Victory in Dangriga

Francis Fonseca

On Wednesday political newcomer Anthony Sabal, the P.U.P.’s David, will go up against veteran politician and the U.D.P.’s goliath, Frank “Pawpa” Mena. The U.D.P. has boasted that its victory will be massive, and has been on the ground for the past month in numbers. So has the P.U.P., which is chronically cash-strapped, but has been very visible in the very short time leading up to the bi-election. So who will win tomorrow? The U.D.P. held a sixty-five car motorcade today to predict victory at the polls, while P.U.P. Leader Francis Fonseca told News Five that against all odds, victory will be theirs.

Francis Fonseca, P.U.P. Leader

“Well, we certainly feel energized. I think Mister Sabal’s candidacy has brought a breath of fresh air to the party in Dangriga. I can tell you that the Dangriga P.U.P. family and base is more energized than I’ve ever seen them before—more united, more focused than I’ve ever seen. So we feel very good. We believe that our greatest asset in this campaign is the candidate, Mister Anthony Sabal; he is a long standing member of this community, well-known, well-respected, well-liked. We believe we have a good organization that has surrounded him. We certainly have put a lot of effort and work into putting that organization in place. I think the party has come together around Mister Sabal and this bye-election. So we feel very good, we feel very good and it is a question of executing tomorrow. Of bringing out our people and execute our plan of action for Election Day. We feel very good that Mister Sabal will be able to win this bye-election for the P.U.P. definitely it will be much improved over recent election. In terms of the sea of red shirts, I don’t think we will match that in terms of our blue shirts, but I think the machinery itself is much improved, it is much better oiled. Everybody, I have to say all thirty constituencies have been very receptive, have been opened to coming to Dangriga; everyone has chipped in and I think everybody will be here in full force tomorrow, working together for a victory. So in that sense, you will see the old blue machine, oiling up and working. If that happens and people come out—as they say they will—to give their support to Mister Sabal, I think we can see a victory.”

“I was going to ask you if I could get a realistic prediction for when the last ballot is printed tomorrow.”

Francis Fonseca

“Our expectation is that Mister Sabal will win; that is our expectation. As I said earlier, the people who have said that they like Mister Sabal, they believe in Mister Sabal, it is now their duty and obligation now to come out and vote for him. It is not enough to say he is a good man; you have to come out and vote for that good man if indeed you do want him to represent you. We will have our structure in place. We will have our campaign machinery in place; our standard bearers from across the country will be here. And I think if all of that comes together and the voters do come out, I think we will see a victory for the People’s United Party tomorrow.”
