Fonseca says Decision to Contest Election Good for the Party

Francis Fonseca

Three weeks ago, there was some doubt that the P.U.P. would contest the bye-election and indeed, without serious internal agitation, perhaps it wouldn’t have. But today, Fonseca says the decision to contest was the right one, and a good one for the party, regardless of the outcome after the last ballot is counted.

Francis Fonseca, P.U.P. Leader

“It has reenergized our party; it has brought a sense of purpose and unity to the party. I think it is no secret, we are tired of losing in the People’s United Party and I think we sense that here in Dangriga. People see an opportunity here for us to win and I think it has helped tremendously that we have such a good candidate, Mister Sabal; who is a humble, quiet man who listens to people and welcomes everyone and he has been really at the center of uniting us around the Dangriga bye-election. He has welcomed everyone from every part of the country. He has listened to the advice of everyone who wants to come in and help so I think that has been critically important. It was the right decision; indeed we consulted on that decision, but it certainly has turned out to be the right decision. And I think regardless of what happens tomorrow, it will be good for the party moving forward in terms of not only for Mister Sabal’s candidacy—because I believe whatever happens tomorrow, he will be strengthened in Dangriga—but also good for the party. Party unity and a central focus on defeating this U.D.P. government.”
