5 Persons Hauled to Court for Weed Possession

Windell Galvez

Five Belize City men charged, in separate incidents, with weed possession were before the courts today.  The first to be arraigned was forty-six year old Michael Wade, who was accused of being in possession of one point three grams of cannabis. He appeared unrepresented and told the court that he smoked weed because it gives him appetite to eat. He was fined one hundred and fifty dollars plus five dollars cost of court, all of which he must pay by August fifteenth or face two months in prison. Twenty-four year old Adrian Gotoy was slapped with a similar charge for possession of forty-one grams of cannabis.   While Gotoy initially pleaded guilty to the charge, he told the court that he was not in agreement with the facts. Gotoy said that there was no way the police could have seen him throwing a bag because he was already in handcuffs when the police approached him.

Kyron Santiago

With that, Senior Magistrate Sharon Fraser entered an equivocal plea of not guilty and offered him bail in the sum of five hundred dollars plus one surety of the same amount. His case was adjourned for September fourth. The third person to be arraigned was fifty-nine year old Windell Galvez, who was found with two point six grams of cannabis whilst walking on Elston Kerr Street on Sunday. Galvez told the court that he smoked marijuana because of his asthma. Twenty-two year old Kyron Santiago, who also appeared before the courts, was discovered with point seven grams of weed in his possession while passing through the Linda Vista Checkpoint that same day. The fifth to be arraigned on weed charge was twenty eight year old Allen Isaac Giovanni Martinez, who was found in possession of ten grams. All three pleaded guilty and were fined.
