6 Fishermen Remanded for Drugs, Guns & Ammo

This afternoon, six fishermen accused of being in possession of a firearm, ammunitions and Illegal drugs while on Turneffe Atolls were back in court. On Wednesday, July first, 2015, while the group was detained at the Police Precinct, they were found in possession of one hundred and eighty-three undersized lobsters. Today, they were remanded to the Belize Central Prison. The six are Belize City residents: Geovanni Murrillo, Deon Usher, Anthony Goff, Emilio Camera, Everon Teck and Jerome Bowen. The group was arraigned before Chief Magistrate Anne Marie Smith for a total of four offenses. Two of the men took the rap for the possession of drugs and undersized lobsters, but no one took ownership for the gun. The men were also read charges for the possession of a firearm in respect of an unlicensed nine millimetre found on Turneffe Atoll and for the possession of eighteen live rounds of ammunition. Usher took ownership for the undersized lobsters and was fined ten thousand seven hundred and eighty dollars. Since Usher pleaded guilty to the fisheries offense, the charge was withdrawn from the other men.  The Chief Magistrate ordered that Usher must pay one thousand dollars and the balance by December thirty-first or, in default, spend six months imprisonment.  On the charge of possession for fourteen grams of weed, Tech pleaded guilty; however, the court prosecutor, Inspector Egbert Castillo, did not have the facts before the court to substantiate the charge. So the matter was deferred for sentencing on September twenty-fourth when the will reappear for the firearm and ammunition offenses, while Tech will be sentenced for his guilty plea for the weed.
