58 year old Naturalized Belizean Murdered in San Ignacio

Pedro Garcia

There has only been one murder in San Ignacio since the start of the year, but the body of a man was found on Wednesday afternoon in the area of the San Ignacio Community Hospital. The grisly discovery was made by a resident who is constructing nearby and it took his daughter to identify him as fifty-eight year old Pedro Garcia, a naturalized Belizean from the village of Arenal, Cayo. He had been chopped multiple times and left to die in the open lot. The last time he was seen alive, was on Tuesday afternoon. Duane Moody has a report on this latest homicide.

This large portion of bloodstained grass in an open lot off the Bullet Tree Road, near the San Ignacio Hospital, is where the body of fifty-eight year old Pedro Garcia was discovered around three o’clock on Wednesday afternoon. Garcia was found lying face-up in a pool of blood; he had been chopped multiple times to the back, head and hands.

“Information was received that there was the lifeless body of a male person in an opened lot between the Bishop Martin Primary School and the Hospital Compound. So they have some lots that are being sold to people and there was a young man who is constructing his house in that neighborhood. He was on his way to check on his building when he saw the motionless body of this person. Police was dispatched and on arrival they saw the lifeless body of a Hispanic person and when an inspection as conducted, it revealed that he had multiple chop wounds to the back of his head and to his back. It showed signs of chop wounds on both of his hands also.”

A Guatemalan by birth, Garcia was a naturalized Belizean living in Arenal, Cayo District. The older man was last seen alive in the village by a relative on Tuesday around four p.m. – he said he was on his way to Benque Viejo del Carmen. It is not known if Garcia ever got to his destination because two days later, his body was found in San Ignacio dressed in the same clothes he wore when he left home.

Insp. Reymundo Reyes

“We sought the assistance of people from the embassy and that’s how we managed to get some information. We proceeded to Arenal where we located a female; she was escorted to the hospital and identified it to be her father, namely Mister Pedro Garcia, fifty-eight years of age of Arenal Village. It is an isolated area. It is not an area that people would normally traffic…unless they have a vehicle that they drive through because it is somewhat of a shortcut to get to the hospital. People are just buying lots in that area some buildings are being constructed, but it is not a residential area.”

It is believed that a machete was used to kill Garcia, who it would appear, attempted to escape from his attacker. A motive, however, for the murder is still not known.

Insp. Reymundo Reyes

“At this moment, the investigation is still ongoing. We the police have not established the motive of the murder and we have not established how Mister Garcia arrived at that said location. But we are sure that where we found the lifeless body is where the actual incident transpired.”

“What was he doing in that area?”

Insp. Reymundo Reyes

“That is something that we are trying to work on. As we speak police officers from the investigation unit have been dispatched to Arenal to try and establish when last Mister Garcia was seen in the village. Family members are saying that he was last seen at four p.m. on Tuesday, but we still need to establish if other people saw him Wednesday morning or is it that when he left Tuesday, he came to San Ignacio or stayed in Benque; that is what we are working on.”

Information is that Garcia reportedly got into a vehicle that took him to San Ignacio on Tuesday evening. Duane Moody for News Five.
