Man Who Brutally Beat Cop is Charged

Darren Levi Gillett

The man responsible for the brutal attack against a police officer on Monday is tonight behind bars after he was charged and arraigned for the attempted murder of Police Constable Jason Hall. Belize City resident, twenty-eight year old Darren Levi Gillett appeared before Chief Magistrate Anne Marie Smith this afternoon, two days after the incident. He was slapped with a slew of charges including Attempted Murder, Use of Deadly Means of Harm, Dangerous Harm and Robbery. The incident occurred on Monday near Rhaburn Ridge at miles thirty-seven on the Phillip Goldson Highway. The officer was traveling from Corozal to report to work in Belize City when he experienced a blowout. Throughout the day, he would allegedly be accompanied by Gillett to Orange Walk to a tire repair shop and then hitch-hiked to the vehicle to replace the two flat tires. But as he finished fixing the tires, Hall was hit multiple times to the head allegedly by Gillett with a gas tank, before the accused would rob the officer of his Mazda car. But the incident was witnessed by several persons in the area and Gillett was detained on Pine Street in Orange Walk Town. The police constable was rushed to the Northern Regional Hospital before being transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital. News Five spoke with Hall’s mother, Lydia Gilharry, today.

What is wrong with these people when a person cannot work and buy the things they need without being beaten to death for it.
There use to be a time in Belize when there was pride in working for what you wanted, now it is I will take from you and kill you for it if I have to.
    Change needs to occur.
