Kareem Betancourt Remanded on Firearm Offences

Kareem Betancourt

Today, after being released from the K.H.M.H. having spent more than a week under police watch, thirty year old Kareem Betancourt, of the Saint Martin’s De Porres area of Belize City was taken to court with his arm in a sling and his face covered. He was arraigned for one count of Aggravated Assault with a Firearm upon Inspector of Police Alejandro Cowo and for two firearm related offenses of Kept Prohibited Firearm and Ammunition in respect of a point forty-five pistol and five live rounds of ammunitions.  Betancourt pleaded not guilty to all charges. Cowo alleges that Betancourt was refused entry into the Elements and he was about to conduct a search on him, when Betancourt pulled out a firearm and pointed it at him.  Cowo set chase after Betancourt who opened fire in his direction causing Cowo to return fire hitting Betancourt in his right elbow. The officer also claims that Betancourt discarded the firearm in an empty lot on Marine Parade Boulevard.  In court, Betancourt told Senior Magistrate Sharon Fraser that he has a number of witnesses who will testify that he did not have a gun.  He further said that he was drunk and has no recollection of what transpired, but that he believes the gun was planted on him. The Senior Magistrate told him that she finds it hard to believe that the Inspector would leave his post of duty to go and chase him to plant a gun on him.  But Betancourt maintained he was innocent of the offense and maintained a not guilty plea. He was denied bail and is due back in Court on July seventeenth, 2015.
