….But Plead Guilty to Offences

Ashton McKenzie

McKenzie and his companions were taken back to the Police Station without being allowed to speak on their own behalf. They were first put into a cell with other Guatemalan prisoners, but say that when they witnessed the conditions of the cell they begged to be allowed to stay outside the cell in an open area, still under constant guard.

Voice of: Ashton McKenzie, Detained in Guatemala

“The following morning, when we woke up, we had our hearing at the Courthouse. They escorted us over there to the Courthouse, and then my colleague who is fluent in Spanish gave the sequence of events that transpired to the Judge. Before we went to the Courthouse we basically discussed as a group what it is that might be the best way out. Now they had allegations against us, and in fearing for our safety and just getting back to Belize, we decided to accept the totally false allegations against us. And then upon doing that they told us that fines would be imposed against all of us, called a ‘falta’ which is an offence, and that we were giving battery against the customs of Santa Cruz which is a complete lie. After being fined the Belizean Ambassador to Guatemala arrived. Upon discussing with the Judge and the other personnel that were present there from Guatemala, they told him that our time in detention would be prolonged because they had to get permission from other military and government personnel for our release…sort of like a chain of command. So the Ambassador told them that was not acceptable because they had already agreed on us paying the fines and being released and now they are not complying with what they said. So he then moved and contacted other government officials in Guatemala and they then contacted the military personnel and members of the Police Department and they gave the okay for our release.”
