Belize Issues Formal Query to Guatemala

Audrey Wallace

As we told you earlier, a formal note has been sent to Guatemala through diplomatic channels, following the reports made by the men. According to Acting C.E.O. in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Audrey Wallace, they had no inkling of the abuses which are now being alleged.

Voice of: Audrey Wallace, Acting C.E.O., Ministry of Foreign Affairs

“When we were informed that they were being held, we were informed in the evening. I believe it was about six-thirty that we became aware that they were being held there and we activated our diplomatic protocols to get a handle on what was happening and trying to find the best way to get our citizens back on Belize side. And all of this went on and we were told that there was disorderly conduct, why it was that they were being held. And they had to go to see a magistrate and pay a fine and then they would be released. We had our ambassador from Belize; he took a taxi and went over there and met the five gentlemen right after…I think they were paying the fine at the court house. It was at that time, after they had paid the fine, that they shared with Ambassador Guerra what you are saying; that they were basically roughed up by the Guatemalan army. They were rather upset about it, but they felt that it was best for them to plead guilty and get out of Guatemala. So that was a decision that they took. So by the time our official met up with the Belizeans, they were already in the process of paying the fine; they had already pled guilty. So we only became aware of it…well we didn’t become aware of it, but our official became aware of it at that time. Not until they were back in Belize later on, on Sunday, did the officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs become aware of the situation. I actually had a conversation with Mister McKenzie myself and once I heard his story, I immediately spoke to our colleagues…I am acting as the C.E.O. in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. I spoke with the substantive C.E.O. and our Ambassador, who are both in Washington and immediately they sent off, early this morning they sent off a note from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to the Office of the American States for the adjacency zone indicating that we would like for them to have a verification surrounding the incident that occurred on Saturday because our Belizean gentlemen are reporting to us that they were mistreated the hands of the Guatemalan officials and they were falsely accused.”

That note was sent out at around ten this morning, so the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is waiting for an official response at this time.

  1. CEO says:

Why do we keep going over into that country?

Do not patronize their business and we need to be more restrictive to their business when they come over to our side to transport their tourists. We allow them too much freedom in our country.

  2. MNHG says:
