Sotz Family Still Grieves Senseless Murder

Hilberto Sotz

The sensational murder of eighteen-year-old Hilberto Sotz of Caye Caulker left the country stunned. Sotz was beaten and killed whilst in police custody at the island’s police station. As we said, two cops were arraigned and remanded, and several others are on interdiction. The police officers involved alleged that Sotz was experiencing breathing problems and that he later passed away, but a post-mortem exam would reveal that he was badly beaten to the body and head. The death of the teen galvanized the island community and there was a riot and peace rally. And just as vocal about the incident, are the teenager’s parents. And for father Santorino Sotz, with less than a week following the senseless killing of his son, the memories are still touching a sore spot. Today, Sotz spoke with the media about some of the sacrifices that he has had to make for his children, including Hilberto. Sotz says that Hilberto had started school at Ocean Academy and later stopped to work. But he decided to continue classes, this time in Belmopan. And one of the big sacrifices that Sotz had to make was to borrow monies from the bank to educate his children. He shared some of his personal struggles today.

Santorino Sotz, Father of Hilberto Sotz

“The thing is that Hilbert he told me that he wanted to be a doctor. He told me that he will do the best that he can do whenever I die he will take over his brother and his mother. He told me no matter how my mother lashes me; I still love my mother because she is my mother. I went to the bank and ask for help and thank God the bank helped me. I didn’t borrow the money to spend; I borrowed it to pay for school. That’s what hurts me because I try better for my son future. But the police man just come and takes my son life for nothing.  The sports weh Ih like, he like basketball and football. That’s his choice. He loved that. Sometimes, I don’t want him to go and do it and I tell him his foot might break but he tells me don’t worry dad. I just love my sports. So, I can’t stop him.”

“How did you as parents feel when he would come home and bring these certificates of achievement for you?”

Santorino Sotz

“I proud of it. Right there I see my son is doing good. Without that performance, I would say I can’t believe it with just words, as my son he brings it to me and show he shows it to me. He gives me morale to push him more because I see what he is doing. I get hurt more when I see policeman tek my son life at no cost.”

Reporter

“When did you get that loan?”

Santorino Sotz

“Last year.”

Reporter

“Tell us how hard you as parents have been working to keep up with payments and keep your children in school?”

Santorino Sotz

“I work two jobs like I told you last time. I have to run taxi, I have to do mason work, I have to dig sand and I have to get a contract to make someone work for me meanwhile I run taxi. That’s why I feel hurt inna my heart. I try for my children and then the police will come and kill my son for nothing. I think that’s wrong ma’am.”
