Demonstration Following Arraignment of Caye Caulker Cops

Two policemen, Constables Hallet King and Leonard Nunez, were charged with the murder of eighteen-year-old Hilberto Sotz on Wednesday. And as we told you on Wednesday night, three others have been put on interdiction; they are Corporal Kirby Palma, Edilberto Patt and Bernadette Ramos, who are all facing thirteen disciplinary charges, including acting uncivil while on duty, neglect, use of unwarranted violence, prejudice to good order. The killing of the teen has incensed and galvanized the Caye Caulker Community and through the winds and rains, they rallied in the streets of the island on Wednesday night. Here’s how that went.

“No matter how hard it rains or blows, it will not change our resolve to make sure that this thing that is happening in Caye Caulker does not and in any way, shape or form continues in any part of country. We have had marches like this in San Pedro. As a matter of fact, for me it touches my heart. My family has been a victim of violence and when we ask the police, like you all will know, ‘it’s still under investigation.”

“I have known Hilbert for so many years. He was a student at the school where I was principal. It really saddens me. He doesn’t deserve this. God is control and my people I want to ask you to go out there peacefully. We send out a message out there that we are tired of this.”

Elito Arceo

“So, today we march in solidarity with Caye Caulker because this cannot continue. This has to stop because no matter where we are from because first and foremost we are Belizeans. It stops now. It stops now. We are Belizeans. It has to stop because it affects every single person. I am asking and pleading to the authorities that an independent investigation is conducted because this has to stop.”

Unfortunately, it will only stop when the police unknowingly tortures and kills one of the rich people sons. By now the Sotzs should have already been approached by numerous lawyers willing to take up their case in suing the police department, but we all know, they are the politicians too, so around and around it goes.
