The annual P.S.E. results were released on Monday evening. And of the twenty-five students who topped this year’s exams, seventeen were from two private schools—the Belize Elementary School and the Bernice Yorke Institute of Learning, both from Belize City. Thirteen year old Gabriel Hope of Bernice Yorke came out on top with three hundred and eighty-six of the four hundred points.

“When the news came to me, I was in complete shock. I was sleeping actually and my sister waked me up. She said that m mom was on the phone and she wanted to talk to me and she told me oh you came in first and I was like oh my god.”

“Talk to us about the work you put in to come out on top.”

Gabriel Hope

“Well I think my teacher Miss Sherry Ali was a big provider in helping me prepare for the exams. She made us stay back for classes every day and as the P.S.E. got closer, she gave us even more work. So I think that really paid off.”

“Anything on the side to prepare?”

Gabriel Hope

“Yeah, of course I studied at home. I studied with my aunt, who is a standard six teacher in Corozal and she helped me to go over past P.S.E. exams to know what the material was.”

Countless hours and months of preparation were put into two days of examinations held earlier this year. The two-part exam tested students on their proficiency in Math, English, Social Studies and Science. Taking third and fourth place respectively are thirteen year old Sahil Hotchandani and fourteen year old Megan Williams, both of Belize Elementary School in Belize City.

“I was so happy. The truth is that hard work does pay off because I did study hard. My teachers pushed me, my parents pushed me; they all supported me and I was just happy and my goal was achieved so I feel good.”

“Going into those exams, were you at all nervous?”

Sahil Hotchandani

“I was prepared enough, but for every big exam you do get nervous and in the beginning I got nervous for English, but then I conquered the fear and the emotion and I decided to do my best, keep calm, do what I’ve learned and leave the rest into god’s hands.”

“I did not plan to get so high. I only wanted A’s for basically everything because I just got here this year. So I had to learn and work hard to get here. So I was really happy. My teachers did a well job with preparing me cause they were always there to help me along the way, telling me what would be the best to study. My parents always reminded me to study every day. So mostly it was the combined efforts of everyone that I got this far.”

For the Bernice Yorke Institute of Learning, it is a testament to the work that they’ve maintained over the years. Early childhood education and development is the key methodology for the institution and the success is overwhelming because it adds to their track record.

“It begins way down at our preschool level where our emphasis is on early childhood education and ensuring that the students are prepared for each level. So if they are not prepared, we ensure that they are prepared to move on to the next level so that they have mastered all those relevant skills. We’ve continued to stick to the same methodology; it hasn’t changed so we expect that the students do well. However, they don’t always perform he way you would like, but they continue to do exactly how we expect them to which is excellent.”

Sahil Hotchandani

“You have to listen in class a lot because the teachers did an excellent job. My parents pushed me, but only on what the teachers did. They helped me revised what all teacher’s material gave me. So you just need to listen and the teachers will help you and do your own studies. Don’t study last minute and you should be fine.”

Megan Williams

“Just relax and study everything each day, but don’t get too caught up in just studying, studying, studying because then you get stressed and then you won’t remember anything. I had to calm down and learn each subject exactly how I needed to.”

Carrel Moralez of San Narciso Primary School in Corozal placed second overall with three hundred and eighty points.
