Resignation Triggers Bye-election in Dangriga

Ivan Ramos

In the aftermath of the resignation, Ivan ‘Macca’ Ramos has no kind words for the P.U.P.; after all he says that the P.U.P. had no kind words for him. According to Ramos, it may very well be that he was set up to step down. He says he has no regrets with his decision, but the truth of the matter is- it is a big step- one that has prompted a by-election. So, we asked Ramos today, just why he resigned and why did he do it in the manner that he did- with no official or formal notice. Did he receive compensation or bribe money from the U.D.P. operatives as the P.U.P. say?

Ivan Ramos, Resigned from House of Representatives

“Absolutely, no. That was not triggered by the U.D.P.s as I am hearing. So they will have to speak to that. Yesterday, at the event that we had, I took time out to speak to the people and tell them my decision and give them also the time table of events that lead to my decision.”

Andrea Polanco

“A couple weeks ago, you made a decision that you’re not seeking re-election. Now, you’re stepping down, what triggered this decision? Is there a specific incident or is there a series of events or activities that led to this decision? What exactly was it?”

“It’s more a series of events that led to that decision, which again, I explained to my constituents yesterday. It started some time back and I will just say then, after all is said, I am observing what was going on what was going on in the party, especially here in Dangriga, that this was, in my humble opinion, something orchestrated deliberately to remove me. Because when I look at the turn of events, that was the resounding message that I should step aside and should give somebody that is more viable a chance to run that will definitely win and that has money to run a campaign and that I don’t have money; that I don’t have the support of the people; that I am not popular; that I cannot beat Pawpa Mena and it got nasty; the chairman especially and elements of the management committee of the executive were quite rude and nasty to me, so all this led to that.  It’s not just something that I did yesterday, in fact on Tuesday the Deputy Party Leader made that recommendation or his opinion that I should be sanctioned, I was prepared to say it then but because of the event planned for yesterday, I just delayed that decision. I have not negotiated with anybody like I heard the Party Leader said that he has been reliably informed.”

Andrea Polanco

“So, you’d say then that there isn’t a last straw that made you make this decision that you no longer want to be a member of the House of Representatives, it wasn’t something that happened suddenly, but rather a combination of things- actions or in some cases lack of action by members of the P.U.P.?”

Ivan Ramos

“That build up. It was the build up and let’s not forget that this was the expectation of the party that I step aside, perhaps they didn’t quite know how to do it, but I got enough. I made that decision and I am comfortable with that decision. I can again say to you that I can and will again walk Dangriga with my head held high because this is what I know myself of and what the people know me of. I have never asked anybody for anything and I have never cut a deal with anybody for anything and the record will show it and time will tell about that also.”

Andrea Polanco

“Did you choose not to notify them or did you give them notice and they are not saying?”

Ivan Ramos

“I chose not to. I chose not to.”

Andrea Polanco

“Why?”

Ivan Ramos

“Andrea, very often people do things and don’t expect that human beings, we are made up of feelings also. I am a human being. This has affected me. So I don’t have to. They know now.”
