John Saldivar, Minister of National Security

“Short but very significant ceremony. A ceremony to acknowledge the bravery and courage in a situation of great odds of ten of the members of the Belize Coast Guard. When I was informed of the developments in the Sarstoon area, my immediate concern was for the safety of those who were out there. But I must at this time publicly commend the admiral and the commander, Commander Bennett, who right on the spot—in the face of these challenges—decided and had the courage to stand up to those who would bully us. I immediately joined the admiral and the commander in indicating that the official position of the Ministry of National Security is to complete our mission and not be deterred by those who would see us fail in that mission. But it was indeed a courageous moment; an act of supreme bravery on the part of those on the ground that we were able to stand firm and to complete our mission. I’m therefore here today to recognize those that were a part of this mission. I can also tell you and tell the admiral and all the members of the coastguard that I am happy and pleased that our ministry made the decision to have the Belize Coast Guard establish this base. I believe we could not have chosen a more competent body to be responsible for this base. And so I congratulate you admiral, I congratulate you commander and I congratulate those who were a part of this mission, but indeed congratulate the entire Belize Coast Guard because you are showing yourselves to be the best among the best.”
