Ride Across Belize Rolls Into Old Capital

It’s that time of the year again, when Social Security take the lead and ride across Belize. It is all for a good cause and this year they are looking to raise sixty thousand dollars. The two organizations being supported are The Palm Centre and St Mary’s Feeding Program. The first leg of the ride started this morning in Corozal and finished in Belize City. News Five went out to find out from the organizers just how rewarding the ride is this year.

Chandra Cansino, Organizer, Ride Across Belize

“Actually it was very, very nice this morning. We did the ride from Corozal to Orange Walk with no sun and no rain for that portion so it was very, very encouraging. When we left Orange Walk, the sun came up so all the prayers that everybody has been praying today came true, so it was very, very successful first day, first stage.”

“Who are the participants in the ride today, tell us a little bit more about them?”

“Well, we had a lot of participants today, including the recipients The Palm Center and St Mary’s Feeding Program. We have some of Palm Centre riders that did the today and they have been very, very supportive of the ride.  We have different teams participated, elite cyclist, non-elite cyclist, persons that that did a little piece from Ladyville and every year that passes participation varies and grows.”

“Right, so we know this is for a good cause. Talk to us about the recipients and how they were selected; and if you are able to, what projects or activities the monies will be invested in?”

Chandra Cansino

“Well, the recipients are selected based on the people that applied. This year, they were the two that submitted an application and provided their proposals. They are very worthy causes. We do our fundraisers through the staff and our target for this year is around sixty thousand dollars and we hope to get there and we continue fundraising which we will do until the end of June where you can donate and feel free to donate to two very worthy causes.”

Andrea Polanco

“Okay. So, we know that you guys have been doing this for a while. Just express to us, why do you keep doing this year after year?”

Chandra Cansino

“I ask myself that same question every year. It is for the causes, it’s for the causes. It is really encouraging to be able to ride and give back to the community because you are doing something that you like and you are giving to a worthy cause. And also it is the healthy living that we promote by the riding because people exercise to be able to be a part of the ride so it is wi9n-win situation because you are promoting a healthy lifestyle and supporting a worthy cause.  Thank you to everyone who has participated, thanks to the staff of social security who are the ones that work tirelessly to execute and organize the ride and thanks to media, we wouldn’t be able to spread awareness if it wasn’t for you guys.”

The second leg of the ride leaves Belize City on Thursday and ends in San Ignacio. Then on Friday, the riders depart San Ignacio and head to Dangriga. And on Saturday morning, the riders will take on the longest leg, some one hundred and nine miles, from Dangriga to Punta Gorda.
