What happened after Belizean Coastguard were ordered out of waters?

Wilfred Elrington

So our Belizean military personnel were ordered out of Belizean waters, but what happens next? What does it mean for future Coast Guard operations in our waters? Will our Coast Guard personnel be able to patrol our waters down south? All that seems a little unclear at the moment, and according to Foreign Minister Elrington, it’s because of the dispute, which apparently renders territorial sovereignty a little uncertain right now.

Wilfred Elrington, Minister of Foreign Affairs

“The difficulty that we are faced with is that the whole thing is disputed. It’s not a clear cut case where there is not a dispute. This is happening at a time when there still remains and exists a dispute with respect to our territory. These border issues are prone to get violent if they are not dealt with very carefully and properly. So it’s something that we’ve got to be very mature about. There is a dispute. They claim it, we claim it. So we’ve got to make discretion be the better part of valour and act in a mature way. In the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, we pride ourselves on practicing what we like to call preventative diplomacy, which is in fact what is being advocated by the United Nations. At all costs we don’t want violence. We don’t want anybody to be killed. You can’t bring back lives. You can always revisit a situation but you can’t bring back lives. So we don’t want any conflict. We don’t want any lives lost. We want to be able to solve our dispute and it is for that reason that it is important that we go to the ICJ as quickly as possible. That is the only place that we haven’t tried so far, and the quicker we can get there the better.”

Last week News five was informed that a formal protest has been launched on Friday. Elrington clarified that it wasn’t, but would have been sent today.

We are not the ones threatening the Guatemala army. Guatemala is just trying to bully us. Look. We all know if it comes to a war with guatemala, we would be massacred. we are not fools. But, at the same time, we will not be moved or bullied either. So guatemala can take their bullishness and shove it up their respective A**

@Al… great to read that you are back blogging, Don’t be a stranger. Times are getting tough here in Belize. It is just a matter of time, before there is bloodshed between the Guats and our military.

As for Barrow and Elrington……… do you remember the nursery rhyme “three blind mice”? Change the words but not the tune “two cowardly mice, Barrow and Sedi. See how they run.
