Castro Cleared Dwight Tillett Out of the Way; Three Votes To One

All eyes were on the United Democratic Party constituency convention in Belize Rural North this weekend, where incumbent Edmond Castro was challenged by Dwight Tillett. In the weeks preceding D-Day Castro was besieged by all manner of negative publicity, which may have led many a political observer to conclude that it would be a tight race. But it was a rout, and in the end Castro emerged victorious. Mike Rudon was in Sandhill and has the story.

If it wasn’t even Petrocaribe, something was certainly rolling in Belize Rural North on Sunday. The crowd was massive, and with the exception of flags and a few shirts for the challenger Dwight Tillett, the aesthetics was all Edmond Castro – literally hundreds gathered outside the gates in bright red shirts proclaiming support for the incumbent. Inside voting took place in these four polling stations, while Castro pressed the flesh to give that last minute encouragement and hopefully, an X beside his name.

“We’re carrying hourly counts. Right now we’re at eleven hundred and fifty-three voters as of one o’clock.”

“We know we have the best machinery in the country in terms of rural constituency, and its showing out here today that we are doing just that. Our committee is bringing out the people, and from the time we started we’re two hundred ahead.”

But for Castro, this is the easy part. He’s been saying for weeks that he’s got the convention covered.

Edmond Castro

“The big win happens before Election Day. The big win happens throughout the year or years. You work toward the final tune which is D-Day. So to win an election you have to start years in advance and we have the mileage under our belts and the expertise, and we have one of the sharpest machineries. Election Day is actually the easiest part. Working towards Election Day is more difficult. And so whenever we have the next elections for the general the same thing will happen. We will blow away our opponent.”

That opponent is Dwight Tillett, who campaigned on bringing integrity back to Belize Rural North. He says neither he nor his campaigners are fazed by the obvious show of big money by Edmond Castro.

“We have done our work. The people have told us privately in their homes what they are going to do. If they do differently that’s their choice. So we are not worried about that. We expected that. That is something we expected.”

But while he isn’t fazed, Tillett is a pragmatic man and knew that his battle was an uphill one – against a two term Minister and a man with access to Petrocaribe money. So he has accepted that it may not go his way when the ballots are counted.

Dwight Tillett

“There would be some disappointment. You can’t attempt anything and fail at it and not be disappointed, but there won’t be any tears from Dwight Tillett. And if I win, there will be very little jubilation because we have too much work to do in this division.”

So did all the negative publicity in the past weeks affect Castro in anyway? Well not if you ask him.

Edmond Castro

“Look out here. Everything red is Clear the Land. You’re looking at Clear the Land country out here. Everything red is Clear the Land. So you figure it out. If my people never love me they wouldn’t come out here in record numbers. It’s here, just scan the cameras. Even di pikni seh they dah Clear the Land.”

Alberto August

“The voters of this country realize that this government by and large is doing well. This country is developing as it has never developed before. And that is what the voters are basically concerned about. The personal attacks don’t really play any role I regards to the way how people vote.”

Dwight Tillett

“I wish we had an election every month, the way money is being spent in the division right now. People who have been crying for roadwork…all of a sudden all over the place there are roadwork.”

The polls closed at five o’clock, and about an hour after it was done. Even before the official announcement of the victor…the crowd erupted in jubilation.

Alberto August

“There was a total of two thousand, one hundred and seventy votes cast today. Of that amount, we have Dwight Tillett receiving five hundred and thirty-seven votes. We have Edmond Castro receiving one thousand, six hundred and twelve.”

Edmond Castro

“I love unnu. And as I always say…I know my people dey love me. As we journey on to defeat whatever major disaster that might come, we will continue to deliver the seat for the United Democratic Party here in this constituency.”

The showing today of over twenty-one hundred voters beat out the last UDP convention in Belize Rural North by over five hundred.

How can people still vote for this criminal. That’s right criminal! Taking bribe money to push forward illegal immigration papers is a crime! He did it and they still vote for him. How foolish can they be?
