Party Condemns Lack of Public Consultation

Lisa Shoman

According to Shoman, the PUP cannot endorse government’s position to amend the Special Agreement since there has not been any input by the opposition or public consultation on the matter.

“At that time, as far as the Leader of the Opposition was confirmed this was not yet answered in the affirmative.  In other words, the government was not saying yes, it was not acquiescing to the request and the Leader of the Opposition made it very clear to the Prime Minister that he expect that Belizeans would be properly informed and consulted about what was occurring.  As you all know, the foreign minister then came out and revealed that in fact the government had agreed to go ahead and amend this special agreement.  There was no coming back to the opposition to see what our view was and as far as we are concerned there has not been a proper explanation to the people of Belize, nor has there been proper consultation.  Additionally, as you know, the foreign minister of Guatemala was here on a visit, the opposition was not informed of this visit and did not, as it would have in the past, accompanied that visit.  Normally  what would happen is that as the Leader of the Opposition’s representative I would have been invited to have sat in on that meeting, especially because we believe that they discussed at that point, discussed the whole amendment to the Special Agreement.  So the opposition was not a party to any of those discussions and furthermore we have not to date been provided with any proposed draft.  So we do not feel that in the circumstances go to any meeting in Guatemala at which we don’t know what is going to be signed and that the people of Belize have not been properly informed.”
