Foreign Minister Explains Press Release Blunder

Wilfred Elrington

The Prime Minister said on Thursday that he had instructed the Minister to issue a release and that the Foreign Minister may have preempted an official release by government on the proposed changes.  Elrington explains the recent slipup.  He says that despite the prime minister’s request to have the information disseminated to the opposition, as well as the media, an official release was never issued, a blunder, he says, that occurred internally.

Wilfred ‘Sedi’ Elrington, Minister of Foreign Affairs

“He had instructed me specifically on, twice actually, to make sure that I notified the press of what we were doing and at that time we only had a few days because it was contemplated that I was going to sign it almost about a month ago.  I, immediately after coming back from Cabinet, I’d given instructions for the press release, a copy of which had been presented to Cabinet to be sent to the press office.  For some strange reason it was not sent to the press office but subsequent to that it had to be sent to the press office because we were also meeting with the national commission, Belize-Guatemala National Commission a

few days later. So when you asked me about it earlier this week, my response was, really as it were, in contemplation that that press release had gone out.  It was when I heard the prime minister’s announcement last night that I wondered what had happened.  And it was only this morning when I checked with the people in my office, the CEO and Alexis and Ambassador Leslie, it transpired that the release, for some reason or the other, had not been sent out.  But we had gotten the green light from the commission as to the proposed move forward with respect to signing the Special Agreement.”

So as we said, the Foreign Minister will travel next weekend to Guatemala for the amendment to the special agreement.
