COLA Says Sedi Done Gone Rogue

Geovanni Brackett

An interview with the Foreign Minister has prompted the Citizens Organized for Liberty through Action, COLA, into action. The organization is once again calling for the removal of Wilfred Elrington from that post.  COLA is incensed by Elrington’s position that government is not obligated to inform the Belizean public of issues relating to the territorial dispute, particularly the proposed amendments to the Compromis.  President Geovanni Brackett told News Five today that Elrington has gone rogue and his recent statements are being condoned by the Barrow administration.

Geovanni Brackett, President, COLA

“We’re not discussing the substance of the substantial of the change that is going to be made to the amendment. I think that is a conversation by itself that had warranted if the Belizean populace would have been given this information prior at least to ventilate it through different mediums but that wasn’t given. And the rationale given by the Minister of Foreign Affairs was that they don’t need to because they were elected and he went further than that by saying that when the Compromis was signed, it was done and the public wasn’t never told other than the fact that it was signed. And that the only thing that the public needs to know is basically the time and the date of the referendum. We at COLA view those comments as very offensive and very obscene and we frown at it because it is a slap in the face. I would think that the government of this day would understand that from their experience in signing that Compromis in secret—because the public didn’t know—and the wave of backlash that they had received that it would have taught them a lesson that whenever you are dealing with such a sensitive issue dealing with the territorial integrity of our nation, that it is best that you take the measure twice, cut once approach. But they think that they know it all and it appears that the government thinks that once they think an issue is not as big enough that they don’t have to tell us. And we are saying that hear what, we are not minors, children…if you have a child that is underage, then maybe you can think for that child, but when you have citizens that are over eighteen and eligible to vote, then you don’t treat them and disrespect them as children and even with children, you have to be careful with. It appears that the Minister of Foreign Affairs is a bicycle without lubricant; he has no tact. Every time he opens his mouth, it rubs the country the wrong way and I think that is just putting it mildly. And I believe that the position of the prime minister just goes further to sanction this ludicrous and insane behavior. This minister has gone rogue on us and it seems that this government seems to go rogue the very same way. The issue of going to the ICJ is a very serious one; it is very sensitive and it calls for much consideration and that is what COLA are saying.”

  1. Pleez! says:

Sedi Elrington is a relic from the DISTANT Past…..He has no real
ideas for an independent Belize. He prefers to read books that speak
of the glory of British Colonial times and then repeats the same
nonsensical ideas of those times when his family was a step
    below royalty in Belize.
