Culture Uncovered at the Image Factory

Culture Uncovered is a mash-up of various mediums of visual art, a collection curated by Kenisha Gooding.  Gooding is a fresh face in art circles across the city, participating in her first show earlier this year when she debuted several pieces at the Women in Art Exhibition.  For her first major effort she has enlisted the talents of eleven other young artists, including Briheda Haylock who’s also making a name for herself among art aficionados.  The exhibit opens on Friday but we got a sneak peek of some of the pieces as they were being hung and installed at the Image Factory earlier today.  Here’s a montage of some of the works that will be featured.

“Culture Uncovered to me, we’re using the word culture because it’s very broad and, you know, in the normal term it would be different, using it with ethnicity or whatever.  But we’re using it with our various art types and art groups and Culture Uncovered is basically, art isn’t just painting or drawing.  We have fashion, we’re going to have live poetry, we’re uncovering the different talents that the artists have to offer.”

“In terms of the participants that are engaged in this exhibit, talk to us about some of the names and their involvement in what’s going on here at the Image Factory.”

“Well, we have a variety of different artists, one that is really well-known Briheda, she’s doing an installation and then we have different artists like Shernell, she’s been doing art, I think since from when she was in high school and her wall is like literally right there.  With Shernell’s one, she pays attention a lot to the female figure.  And then we have a graffiti artist Jonathan Flores and then my work is featured in the show as well and we just have like a bunch of talent coming together.  We also have Elton doing fashion and also he’s also doing like these aluminum paintings as well.”

“What was the idea or the motivation behind putting together this exhibit in terms of bringing together all these talents under one roof?”

Kenisha Gooding

“Well I started out doing art from when I was little and got into it in sixth form and one of my friends was like, “feature one of your works in a show.”  And Women in Art was up and running and I’m like we should feature, I should feature it in it.  And I did it and I was like, what if we not only had a show that, you know, supported women doing art but everyone doing art and not only art as in painting or charcoal or pencil, but every form there is of art and I just got a bunch of my friends that use different mediums and I said let’s do a show together and they agreed.”

“Now in terms of the audience that this is catering to, either young men and women who are artistically inclined or older folks who may be into this type of medium, if I may…”

Kenisha Gooding

“Well the show basically encourages from the small children all the way up to the elderly.  It’s not very graphic so there won’t be, the show won’t offend anyone who comes to view it.  There’s not a lot of, we are pushing the limits here but it’s not to an extent that you will be offended if you see one of the pieces.  They’re not really extreme or extremely exotic.  So children can come see it, elderly persons can come see it, teenagers can come see it and they can just enjoy the art that is here.”

The art show opens at six o’clock on Friday evening at the Image Factory.
